4. Operating the Lens

4.1 Zooming

The RF-S55-210mm lens features a telephoto zoom range from 55mm to 210mm. Rotate the zoom ring to adjust the focal length. The lens extends physically as you zoom towards the telephoto end (210mm).

4.2 Focusing

This lens incorporates a Stepping Motor (STM) for autofocus. The STM system provides smooth, quiet, and continuous focus adjustments, which is particularly beneficial for video recording with Canon's Movie Servo AF.

4.3 Optical Image Stabilization (IS)

The lens features Optical Image Stabilization to reduce blur caused by camera shake. It provides up to 4.5 equivalent stops of shake correction. When paired with EOS R series cameras featuring In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS), this can increase to up to 7.0 equivalent stops of shake correction. This feature is particularly useful in low-light conditions or when shooting at longer focal lengths.

Figure 4.4: Demonstrates the effect of Optical Image Stabilization, showing a blurred image when IS is off and a sharper image when IS is on.

4.4 Aperture and Image Quality

The lens has a 7-blade circular aperture, which contributes to producing aesthetically pleasing, soft backgrounds (bokeh). It also incorporates two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lens elements and one aspheric element to minimize chromatic aberration and ensure high resolution and contrast. Canon's Super Spectra Coating (SSC) is applied to reduce ghosting and flare.

4.5 Minimum Focusing Distance and Magnification

The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of approximately 2.4 ft. (0.73m) at the 210mm telephoto end and 3.2 ft. (1.0m) at 55mm. It provides a maximum magnification of 0.28x at 210mm, allowing for detailed close-up shots of smaller subjects.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Lens

  • Use a blower brush to remove dust from the lens surface.
  • For smudges or fingerprints, use a clean, soft lens cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces, along with a small amount of lens cleaning fluid.
  • Never use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.

5.2 Storage

  • Store the lens with both front and rear caps attached.
  • Keep the lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid storing the lens in areas with high humidity to prevent mold growth.

5.3 Handling Precautions

  • Avoid dropping or subjecting the lens to strong impacts.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the lens.
  • Protect the lens from water and moisture.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your lens, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • Lens not attaching securely: Ensure the red index marks are aligned and the lens is rotated until it clicks.
  • Autofocus not working: Check if the camera is in autofocus mode. Ensure the lens is clean and free of obstructions. Verify that the lens is properly mounted.
  • Blurry images: Confirm that Image Stabilization (IS) is enabled if shooting handheld in low light or at long focal lengths. Check shutter speed and aperture settings. Ensure the lens elements are clean.
  • Lens not recognized by camera: Power off the camera, detach and reattach the lens, then power on the camera. Ensure camera firmware is up to date.

For specific error codes or persistent issues, refer to your camera's instruction manual or contact Canon customer support.
