3. Setup
3.1 Battery Installation
- Unscrew the battery case cover located at the top of the meter.
- Insert three (3) LR44 1.5V button cell batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Securely screw the battery case cover back on.
3.2 Initial Preparation
Before first use, ensure the probes are clean and free from any debris. Remove the protective cap from the probes.
4. Operation
The YK-S02 meter is designed for straightforward operation. Follow these steps for accurate measurements:

Figure 4.1: Step-by-step guide for testing soil moisture and EC. This image illustrates turning on the meter, cleaning the probe, converting to moisture mode for reading, converting to EC mode for reading, and finally turning off and cleaning the probe.
4.1 General Measurement Steps
- Turn On: Press the ON/OFF button to power on the meter.
- Clean Probe: Before each measurement, clean the stainless steel probes with a clean cloth to remove any residue.
- Insert Probe: Gently insert the probes vertically into the soil or liquid solution to the desired depth. Ensure the electrodes are fully inserted for accurate readings.
- Select Mode: Press the MODE/CAL button to switch between Moisture (%) and EC (mS/cm) measurement modes. The temperature will be displayed simultaneously.
- Read Value: Wait a few seconds for the reading to stabilize on the LCD screen.
- Hold Reading: If needed, short press the HOLD/TEMP button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
- Temperature Unit: Long press the HOLD/TEMP button to switch between Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C).
- Turn Off: After use, press the ON/OFF button to power off the meter. Clean the probes thoroughly before storing.
4.2 Specific Measurement Examples

Figure 4.2: Illustrative examples of moisture readings in various soil and liquid conditions. This image demonstrates readings for dry soil (0.0%), liquid solution (99.9%), wet soil (45.8%), and typical planting soil (26.7%).

Figure 4.3: The YK-S02 meter can measure EC in both soil and liquid solutions. This image shows the meter being used to test EC in potted soil and in a beaker containing a liquid solution.
4.3 Important Notes for Accurate Readings
- Avoid Obstructions: When inserting the probes into soil, avoid hitting stones or hard objects that could damage the probes.
- Full Insertion: For reliable measurements, ensure the entire length of the electrodes is fully inserted into the soil or solution. Partial insertion may lead to inaccurate results.
- Soil Density: The tightness and density of the soil can influence the testing value. Readings may vary slightly depending on soil compaction.
- Cleaning: Always clean the probes thoroughly after each use to prevent residue buildup, which can affect future readings.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning the Probes
After each use, especially when measuring in soil, it is critical to clean the stainless steel probes. Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe off any soil particles or residue. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals, as this may damage the probes.
5.2 Storage
When not in use, replace the protective cap over the probes. Store the meter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep it out of reach of children.
5.3 Battery Replacement
If the display becomes dim or the meter does not power on, it may be time to replace the batteries. Follow the instructions in Section 3.1 to replace the three LR44 1.5V button cell batteries. Dispose of old batteries responsibly according to local regulations.
