1. Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the TEAC AD-850 Cassette Deck CD Player. This unit combines a cassette deck, a CD player, and a USB recording/playback function into a single device. 2. Safety Information

To ensure safe operation and prevent damage, observe the following precautions:

4. Component Identification

4.1 Front Panel

The front panel houses all primary controls and indicators for the CD player, cassette deck, and USB functions.

• POWER Button: Turns the unit on or off.
• CD Tray: For inserting and removing CDs.
• Cassette Compartment: For inserting and removing cassette tapes.
• Display: Shows track information, time, and operational status.
• REC LEVEL Knob: Adjusts recording input level.
• SOURCE Button: Selects input source for recording (CD, USB, TAPE, LINE).

• LINE INPUT (RCA): Connect external audio sources (e.g., turntable, receiver).

4.3 Remote Control (RC-1329)

• SOURCE Buttons: Select CD, USB, or TAPE.
• PLAYBACK Controls: Play, Pause, Stop, Fast Forward, Rewind, Skip Track.
• RECORD Button: Initiates recording.
• DISPLAY Button: Changes information shown on the unit's display.
• REPEAT/SHUFFLE/PROGRAM Buttons: Control CD/USB playback modes.

5. Setup

5.1 Connecting Audio Cables

1. Connect the LINE OUTPUT RCA jacks on the rear panel of the AD-850 to the audio input jacks (e.g., CD IN, AUX IN) on your amplifier or receiver using the supplied RCA audio cable.
2. If connecting an external audio source for recording (e.g., a turntable with a built-in pre-amp, or another audio player), connect its audio output to the LINE INPUT RCA jacks on the rear panel of the AD-850.

5.2 Connecting Power

1. Ensure the unit's power switch is in the OFF position.
2. Connect the supplied power cord to the AC IN terminal on the rear panel of the AD-850.
3. Plug the other end of the power cord into a suitable AC wall outlet.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 CD Player Operation

1. Press the POWER button to turn on the unit.
2. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to open the CD tray.
3. Place a CD (audio CD or CD-R/RW with MP3 files) onto the tray with the label side up.
4. Press OPEN/CLOSE again to close the tray. The unit will read the disc.
5. Press the PLAY (►) button to start playback.
6. Use the SKIP (►►| / |◄◄) buttons to navigate between tracks.
7. Press the STOP (■) button to stop playback.
8. MP3 Playback: When playing MP3 CDs, track information (ID3 tags) will be displayed. Use the FOLDER buttons to navigate through folders.
9. Playback Modes: Use the REPEAT, SHUFFLE, and PROGRAM buttons on the remote control to select desired playback modes.

6.2 Cassette Deck Operation

6.2.1 Playback

1. Press the EJECT (▲) button to open the cassette compartment.
2. Insert a cassette tape. The unit supports Normal, Chrome, and Metal (playback only) tapes.
3. Close the cassette compartment.
4. Press the PLAY (►) button to start playback.
5. Use the REWIND (◄◄) and FAST FORWARD (►►) buttons to quickly move through the tape.
6. Adjust the PITCH CONTROL knob to fine-tune the playback speed (±10% range).
7. Press the STOP (■) button to stop playback.

6.2.2 Recording

1. Insert a recordable cassette tape (ensure the erase protection tabs are intact).
2. Select the desired source for recording (CD, USB, or LINE IN) using the SOURCE button.
3. Adjust the REC LEVEL knob to set the recording volume. Monitor the level meter on the display to avoid distortion.
4. Press the RECORD (●) button. The unit will enter record-pause mode.
5. Press the PLAY (►) button to begin recording.
6. Press the STOP (■) button to end recording.

6.3 USB Recording and Playback

6.3.1 Recording to USB

1. Insert a USB flash drive into the USB port on the front panel.
2. Select the desired source for recording (CD, TAPE, or LINE IN) using the SOURCE button.
3. Adjust the REC LEVEL knob.
4. Press the RECORD (●) button. The unit will enter record-pause mode.
5. Press the PLAY (►) button to begin recording. Audio will be recorded as MP3 files to automatically generated folders on the USB drive.
6. Press the STOP (■) button to end recording.

6.3.2 USB Playback

1. Insert a USB flash drive containing MP3 files into the USB port.
2. Select USB as the source using the SOURCE button.
3. Press the PLAY (►) button to start playback.
4. Use the SKIP (►►| / |◄◄) buttons to navigate between tracks.
5. Use the FOLDER buttons to navigate through folders on the USB drive.
6. Playback Modes: Use the REPEAT, SHUFFLE, and PROGRAM buttons on the remote control to select desired playback modes.

6.4 Microphone Input and Echo Function

1. Connect a microphone to the MIC input jack on the front panel.
2. Adjust the MIC LEVEL knob to control the microphone volume.
3. To add an echo effect, slide the ECHO MODE switch to position '1' or '2' for different echo levels. Set to 'OFF' to disable the echo.
4. The microphone signal can be mixed with playback from CD, cassette, or USB, and can also be recorded to cassette or USB.

7. Maintenance

• Cleaning the Unit: Wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents.
• Cleaning CD Lens: Use a commercially available CD lens cleaner if playback issues occur.
• Cleaning Cassette Heads: Regularly clean the cassette deck's heads, pinch rollers, and capstans with a cotton swab lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol. This helps maintain sound quality and prevent tape damage.
• Demagnetizing Cassette Heads: Periodically demagnetize the cassette heads using a cassette head demagnetizer to prevent high-frequency loss during playback and recording.
