AIM 17656
AIM Plumbing Solder Kit (Model 17656) Instruction Manual
Comprehensive instructions for using the AIM Plumbing Solder Kit, including lead-free solder wire, flux, and brush, for plumbing repairs.
Brand: AIM | Model: 17656
1. Product Overview
The AIM Plumbing Solder Kit is designed for reliable plumbing repairs and installations. It includes lead-free solder wire, soldering paste flux, and a brush, providing the essential components for creating strong, leak-free joints in copper and brass plumbing systems.
The Aquasol solder is manufactured with a premium quality alloy, ensuring excellent solder flow. This kit is suitable for both homeowners undertaking simple repairs and professional plumbing contractors on larger projects. It complies with ASTM B32 requirements for potable water connections and is certified NSF and UPC.

2. Safety Precautions
Always prioritize safety when working with soldering equipment and materials. Failure to follow safety guidelines can result in injury or property damage.
- Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation in your work area to disperse fumes generated during soldering. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated indoor space.
- Eye Protection: Always wear appropriate safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from heat, flux splatter, and molten solder.
- Hand Protection: Wear heat-resistant gloves to protect your hands from burns.
- Fire Safety: Keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water nearby. Be aware of flammable materials in the vicinity of your work.
- Hot Surfaces: Solder joints and tools will be extremely hot. Allow them to cool completely before handling.
- Chemical Handling: Avoid direct skin contact with flux. Wash hands thoroughly after use. Refer to the product's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for detailed information.
- Proposition 65 Warning: This product may expose you to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
3. Setup and Preparation
3.1 Required Tools (Not Included)
- Propane or MAPP gas torch (heat source)
- Abrasive material (e.g., sandpaper, wire brush, emery cloth) for cleaning pipes
- Clean rags or cloths
- Pipe cutter or hacksaw
- Deburring tool
3.2 Preparing the Joint
- Cut and Deburr Pipes: Cut copper pipes to the required length. Use a deburring tool to remove any burrs from the inside and outside edges of the pipe ends.
- Clean Surfaces: Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of both the pipe and the fitting. Use an abrasive material to remove any oxidation, dirt, or grease until the copper has a bright, shiny appearance. This step is critical for proper solder flow and a strong joint.
- Apply Flux: Using the provided brush, apply a thin, even coat of AIM NitroFlux soldering paste to both the cleaned outside surface of the pipe end and the inside surface of the fitting socket. Ensure complete coverage of the areas to be soldered.
- Assemble Joint: Immediately assemble the pipe and fitting, twisting slightly to evenly distribute the flux. Ensure the pipe is fully seated in the fitting.

4. Soldering Procedure
Once the joint is prepared, proceed with the soldering process:
- Heat the Joint: Using your torch, apply heat evenly around the circumference of the fitting, focusing on the base of the fitting where the pipe enters. Keep the flame moving to avoid overheating one spot.
- Test for Temperature: Periodically touch the AIM Aquasol solder wire to the joint opposite the flame. When the pipe and fitting reach the correct temperature, the solder will melt and be drawn into the joint by capillary action. Do not melt the solder directly with the flame.
- Apply Solder: Once the joint is hot enough, remove the flame and feed the solder wire into the joint. The solder should flow smoothly and completely around the joint, forming a continuous bead. Apply enough solder to fill the joint, but avoid excessive application.
- Cool and Clean: Allow the joint to cool naturally without disturbing it. Do not quench with water, as this can weaken the joint. Once cooled, wipe away any excess flux residue with a damp cloth.

5. Care and Storage
- Store solder wire and flux in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Ensure the flux container is tightly sealed after each use to prevent drying out.
- Clean the application brush thoroughly after use to prolong its life.
- Dispose of any waste materials, including used rags and empty containers, according to local regulations.
6. Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Solder Not Flowing: This usually indicates insufficient heat or improperly cleaned surfaces. Ensure the joint is heated evenly to the correct temperature and that all surfaces are bright and clean before applying flux.
- Cold Joint (Dull, Lumpy Solder): A cold joint occurs when the joint was not heated sufficiently or was disturbed during cooling. Reheat the joint, apply a small amount of fresh flux, and re-solder. Allow to cool undisturbed.
- Leaking Joint: A leak often results from an incomplete solder fill or a cold joint. Drain the system, clean the joint thoroughly, reapply flux, and re-solder, ensuring full capillary action.
- Excessive Solder Buildup: This can happen if too much solder is applied or if the joint is overheated. While not always detrimental to joint integrity, it can be unsightly. Practice proper solder application technique.
