4.1 Power Source Connection

The SB3608DAQ4 is a tool body only product. It requires a Metabo HPT 18V/36V MultiVolt battery or a Metabo HPT AC adapter (both sold separately) for operation.

  • Battery Installation: Align the battery pack with the receptacle on the sander and slide it in until it clicks into place. Ensure it is securely latched.
  • AC Adapter Installation: If using an AC adapter, connect it to the tool's power port and then plug the adapter into a suitable power outlet.

  1. Ensure the tool is disconnected from its power source (battery removed or AC adapter unplugged).
  2. Locate the belt tension release lever, typically on the side of the sander.
  3. Push the lever to release the tension on the sanding belt.
  4. Remove the old sanding belt (if applicable).
  5. Slide the new 3" x 21" sanding belt onto the rollers, ensuring the directional arrow on the belt matches the arrow on the sander body.
  6. Return the tension release lever to its original position to secure the new belt.

  • To stop the sander, release the trigger switch.
  • For continuous operation, press the lock-on button while the trigger is depressed. To release, depress the trigger again.

5.2 Variable Speed and Auto Mode

The sander features a variable speed dial and an auto mode setting.

  • Variable Speed Dial: Rotate the dial (numbered 1-6) to select the desired belt speed. Lower settings are suitable for fine finishing or heat-sensitive materials, while higher settings are for rapid material removal.
  • Auto Mode: Select 'A' on the speed dial to engage auto mode. In this setting, the sander automatically adjusts the belt speed based on the load, optimizing performance, reducing noise, and conserving battery power.

5.3 Belt Tracking Adjustment

Proper belt tracking ensures the sanding belt remains centered on the rollers during operation. If the belt drifts to one side, adjust the tracking knob (usually located on the front of the sander) while the sander is running (briefly, with caution) until the belt runs true.

5.4 Sanding Techniques

  • Always hold the sander firmly with both hands.
  • Place the sander gently onto the workpiece before starting the motor.
  • Move the sander smoothly and evenly across the surface, applying light, consistent pressure. Avoid pressing down too hard, as this can reduce efficiency and damage the workpiece or tool.
  • For best results, sand with the grain of the wood.
  • Lift the sander off the workpiece before releasing the trigger to prevent gouging.
