2. Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is crucial for successful decal application and longevity. All surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned of wax, dirt, and any old adhesive residue before applying your vinyl graphics to ensure proper adhesion, otherwise peeling or lifting may occur. Please read the instructions below for specific material cleaning procedures.
General Guidelines:
- Fiberglass Boats: Clean surface with acetone or our preferred cleaner - 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover (which comes in an aerosol spray can). After solvent has evaporated, wipe down area with soapy water (a few drops of hand dishwashing liquid mixed with water in a spray bottle).
- Plastics and Glass: Wipe surface clean with a window cleaner. Remove any tape or glue residue with a single edge razor blade or plastic scraper.
- Painted Metals and Base Metals: Clean surfaces with a solvent such as Lacquer Thinner. Dry the surface with a lint-free cloth before the solvent evaporates and re-clean with a soapy water solution before applying graphic.
Freshly painted surfaces should be dry for at least 72 hours prior to application of the vinyl graphics. For interior painted surfaces, ensure they are cleaned with any household cleaner or mild soap and water.
Temperature Requirements: The temperature of the room and the temperature of the intended surface should be between 45 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit for best results. Very high humidity (above 90 percent) may affect the application process.

3. Decal Application Instructions
Follow these steps carefully for optimal decal adhesion and appearance. You will need masking tape, a spray bottle, dishwashing liquid (e.g., Joy, Ivory), a tape measure, and a squeegee (a credit card can be used).
- Prepare Your Tools: Gather masking tape, a spray bottle, dishwashing liquid (e.g., Joy, Ivory), and a tape measure.
- Mark Placement: Use masking tape to underline where you intend to place the vinyl sign. If any letters drop below the line, remove tape in that specific area.
- Prepare Soapy Water Solution: In your spray bottle, mix a solution of approximately 20 drops of dishwashing liquid in one pint of water. Carefully spray this soapy water onto the area where you plan to place the vinyl.
- Prepare Decal: Place the graphic face down and slowly peel away the waxed paper backing. Then, spray the soapy water solution onto the exposed adhesive side of the vinyl sign. Ensure the graphic is adhering properly to the application tape (premask).
- Position Decal: While the application area is still very wet, carefully place the graphic in the selected position. The soapy water allows for minor adjustments and sliding the graphic into the exact desired spot. Gently rub your palm over the graphic. (The water assists with positioning and removing air bubbles, it does not affect adhesion).
- Squeegee Water Out: Use a squeegee (a credit card works well) to firmly press and squeeze the water out from under the graphic. Squeegee in all directions, repeating several times. This process removes both air and water from beneath the graphic.
- Allow to Dry: Let the graphic dry completely. The drying time depends on temperature and humidity.
- 80 degrees Fahrenheit: Approximately 30 minutes
- 70 degrees Fahrenheit: Approximately 3 hours
- 50 degrees Fahrenheit: Approximately 4 to 6 hours
These are recommendations only; the graphic MUST be dry before proceeding to the next step. Recommended temperatures for post-installation are 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Remove Application Tape: Slowly peel back the pre-mask translucent application tape. The graphic should adhere to the surface. If the graphic does not adhere, it indicates you did not wait long enough for the water to dry. Gently press the graphic back down and allow significantly more drying time before attempting to remove the tape again.
4. Troubleshooting
- Graphic Not Adhering: If the graphic does not adhere to the surface when removing the application tape, it means the underlying water has not fully dried. Gently press the graphic back down and allow significantly more drying time before attempting to remove the tape again.
- Air Bubbles: If you find any small air bubbles after the application tape is removed, you can carefully prick them with a small pin. The bubbles will eventually disappear from sun exposure over time.
5. Maintenance and Care
Your 411 DECALS are designed for durability. They are digitally printed on polymeric foil and laminated, making them resistant to:
- Heat
- Cold
- Moisture
- Oil
- UV rays
To maintain the appearance and longevity of your decals, clean them gently with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or high-pressure washing directly on the decal edges.
