Setup

Proper setup of the Sebupar Door Hinge Jig is crucial for accurate mortise cutting. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Prepare the Door: Ensure the door edge where the hinge will be installed is clean and free of obstructions. This jig is designed for use on the door edge only, not the door jamb or frame.
  2. Determine Hinge Shape: Identify if your hinges are square, 1/4" radius, or 5/8" radius.
    • For 5/8" radius corner hinges, use the provided corner guides.
    • For square corners, remove the corner guides.
    • For 1/4" radius corners, use the provided corner guides.
  3. Position the Jig: Place the hinge mortiser template onto the edge of the door at the desired hinge location.
  4. Clamp the Jig: Tighten the clamp screw to secure the jig firmly to the door. Ensure the jig is flush against the door surface and does not splay out.
  5. Adjust Hinge Length Guide: The jig features a hinge length guide stop. Adjust this stop to match the length of your hinge (3", 3-1/2", 4", 4-1/2", or 5").
  6. Mark Edges (Optional but Recommended): After setting the length guide, you may mark the edges of the template on the door with a pencil to confirm placement before routing.

Operating Instructions

Once the jig is securely set up, proceed with cutting the hinge mortise using a router.

  1. Install Router Bit: Pop out the router bit from its storage on the jig and install it into your router.
  2. Set Router Bit Depth: Use the built-in depth gauge on the jig to set the correct depth for your router bit. The jig has markings for thin hinges (3", 3-1/2", 4") and thick hinges (4-1/2", 5"). Lock the router bit depth in place according to your hinge thickness.
  3. Route the Mortise: With the router bit depth set, turn on your router and carefully guide it through the template area to cut out the hinge shape. Ensure the router base remains flat against the jig surface throughout the process.
  4. Remove the Jig: Once the mortise is cut, turn off the router, allow the bit to stop spinning, and then loosen the clamp screw to remove the door hinge template from the door.
  5. Drill Hinge Screw Holes: Place the hinge into the newly cut mortise. Use the included self-centering hinge bit with a drill to create pilot holes for the hinge screws. This ensures the screws are perfectly centered.
  6. Install Hinge: Secure the hinge to the door using the appropriate screws. The included PH2/8-10SL double-ended screwdriver bit can be used with a drill for this purpose.

Important Safety Note: Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and hearing protection when operating power tools. Ensure the workpiece is stable and secure.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and continued accuracy of your Sebupar Door Hinge Jig, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the jig with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove sawdust and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents that could damage the plastic material.
  • Storage: Store the jig in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep the included bits stored securely within the jig's designated slots to prevent loss or damage.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the jig for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage. Ensure the clamp screw operates smoothly and securely. If any part is damaged, discontinue use and consider replacement.
  • Bit Care: Keep the router bit and self-centering hinge bit clean and sharp. Dull bits can lead to poor cuts and increased strain on your router.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues while using your Sebupar Door Hinge Jig, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Mortise is not clean or precise:
    • Ensure the router bit is sharp.
    • Verify the jig is clamped tightly and flush against the door edge. Any movement or splaying can affect accuracy.
    • Check that the router bit depth is correctly set for your hinge thickness.
    • Ensure the router base is kept flat against the jig during routing.
  • Jig insert rides proud or catches the router:
    • Ensure the removable plastic inserts are fully seated.
    • If the issue persists, temporarily secure the insert with painter's tape to prevent it from lifting during routing.
  • Hinge screw holes are off-center:
    • Ensure the self-centering hinge bit is properly seated in your drill and that you are applying even pressure.
    • Verify the hinge is correctly positioned in the mortise before drilling.
  • Jig does not clamp securely to the door:
    • Ensure the clamp screw is fully engaged and tightened.
    • Check for any debris or obstructions preventing a tight clamp.
    • The jig is designed for standard door thicknesses. If your door is unusually thin or thick, the clamping mechanism may not be optimal.
