3. Setup
3.1 Attaching the Neck Strap
- Thread the ends of the neck strap through the strap lugs on each side of the binocular body.
- Secure the strap by passing it back through the buckle, ensuring it is tightly fastened.
- Adjust the strap length for comfortable carrying around your neck.
3.2 Adjusting Eyecups
The eyecups can be adjusted to provide the optimal eye relief for comfortable viewing.
- For users without eyeglasses: Rotate the eyecups counter-clockwise until they are fully extended.
- For users with eyeglasses: Rotate the eyecups clockwise until they are fully retracted. This allows your eyes to be closer to the eyepieces, providing a full field of view.
3.3 Adjusting Interpupillary Distance
The interpupillary distance (the distance between the centers of your pupils) must be set correctly to see a single, circular image.
- Hold the binoculars up to your eyes.
- Bend the binocular body at the hinge until you see a single, perfectly circular field of view.
3.4 Diopter Adjustment
This adjustment compensates for differences in vision between your left and right eyes.
- Close your right eye or cover the right objective lens.
- Look through the binoculars with your left eye at a distant object.
- Rotate the central focus wheel until the image is sharp for your left eye.
- Close your left eye or cover the left objective lens.
- Look through the binoculars with your right eye at the same distant object.
- Adjust the diopter ring (usually on the right eyepiece) until the image is sharp for your right eye.
- The diopter setting is now calibrated for your eyes. You should only need to use the central focus wheel for subsequent observations.
4. Operating
4.1 Focusing
Once the interpupillary distance and diopter are set, focusing is straightforward:
- Raise the binoculars to your eyes.
- Locate your desired object.
- Rotate the central focus wheel until the object appears sharp and clear. The SmartFocus concept allows for quick adjustments with minimal rotation.

5. Maintenance and Care
5.1 Cleaning Lenses
The lenses of your ZEISS SFL binoculars feature advanced coatings for optimal performance. Proper cleaning is crucial to maintain their quality.
- Remove loose dust: Use a soft brush or a blower bulb to gently remove any loose dust or particles from the lens surfaces.
- Clean smudges: For fingerprints or stubborn smudges, breathe lightly on the lens surface to create condensation, then gently wipe with the provided microfiber cleaning cloth. Use circular motions from the center outwards.
- Avoid harsh chemicals: Never use abrasive cloths, paper towels, or harsh cleaning solutions, as these can damage the lens coatings.
The ZEISS T* coating ensures brilliant, high-contrast images, especially in challenging light conditions. The LotuTec coating provides a clear view in wet weather by repelling water and dirt from the lens surface.

5.2 General Cleaning and Storage
- Wipe the binocular body with a soft, damp cloth to remove dirt or grime.
- Store the binoculars in their protective case when not in use to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage.
- Avoid storing in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
- The binoculars are waterproof; however, after exposure to water, dry them thoroughly before storing.

6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Image is blurry or out of focus. | Incorrect focus wheel adjustment or diopter setting. | Adjust the central focus wheel. If still blurry, re-perform diopter adjustment (Section 3.4). |
| Cannot see a single, circular image. | Interpupillary distance is not correctly set. | Adjust the hinge of the binoculars until a single circular field of view is achieved (Section 3.3). |
| Dark edges or 'blackouts' in the view. | Eyecups not set correctly or eyes not positioned properly. | Adjust eyecups (Section 3.2) and ensure your eyes are centered with the eyepieces. |
| Objective lens caps do not stay on securely. | Design characteristic or wear. | Ensure caps are fully seated. Consider aftermarket alternatives if persistent. |
| Image appears dim or lacks contrast. | Lenses are dirty. | Clean the objective and eyepiece lenses carefully (Section 5.1). |
