Setup

Follow these steps to set up your AUTOOL SDT103 Smoke Leak Detector:

1. Fill with Test Oil: Unscrew the oil filler cap on the top of the unit. Using the provided oil refill bottle, add no more than 20 ml of baby oil or paraffin oil. Securely replace the cap.
2. Connect Air Source: Connect an external workshop air source (e.g., air compressor) to the air input port on the back of the SDT103 unit.
3. Connect Power: Connect the power clamp cables to a 12V vehicle battery. Ensure the red clamp is connected to the positive (+) terminal and the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal. Then, plug the power cord into the 12V power input port on the back of the SDT103.
4. Connect Smoke Duct: Attach the smoke output hose to the smoke output port on the back of the SDT103.

Operating Instructions

Once the unit is set up, proceed with leak detection:

1. Prepare System for Test: Isolate the system you wish to test (e.g., intake, exhaust, EVAP). Use the appropriate adapter (conical or inflatable bladder) to seal the opening of the system.
2. Activate Airflow: Turn the flow control dial on the front of the SDT103 counterclockwise to open the airflow.
3. Start Smoke Generation: Press the "SMOKE SWITCH" button on the front panel to begin generating smoke. The unit will start producing smoke within seconds.
4. Monitor Flow Meter: Observe the external flow meter to ensure appropriate air pressure for the system being tested. Adjust the flow control dial as needed to prevent damage to sensitive components.
5. Detect Leaks: Introduce smoke into the system. Visually inspect the system for escaping smoke, which indicates a leak. For hard-to-reach areas, use a bright light to aid in detection.
6. EVAP System Specifics: For EVAP systems, locate the service port (often in the engine compartment, but may vary). Remove the check valve using a spool wrench, install the EVAP service port adapter, and then introduce smoke.
7. Complete Test: Once leaks are identified and repaired, turn off the smoke switch and disconnect the unit from the power and air sources.
