Using This Manual

This reproduction manual consists of 16 pages, including the cover. It is printed on heavy-weight paper to ensure durability and readability. For best results, ensure adequate lighting when consulting the diagrams and instructions. Familiarize yourself with the machine's components before attempting any adjustments.

  • Review Diagrams: Pay close attention to the detailed illustrations provided for each adjustment step.
  • Understand Terminology: The manual uses specific terminology for machine parts. Refer to a general Singer 66 user manual if unfamiliar with component names.
  • Safety First: Always disconnect the sewing machine from power before performing any internal adjustments or maintenance.

Timing and Adjusting Procedures

This section outlines critical procedures for ensuring the correct operation of your Singer Class 66 sewing machine. Precise timing and adjustment are essential for proper stitch formation and machine longevity.

Spotting Needle and Oscillating Hook Correctly Timed

To correctly time the needle and oscillating hook, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the balance wheel over toward you until the lower timing mark on the needle bar connecting stud is centered on the top of the finger of the timing gauge (H, Fig. 7).
  2. At this point, the needle bar is in its upward stroke.
  3. The point of the sewing hook should be directly behind the center of the needle as shown at L, Fig. 7. If this condition is met, the hook is correctly timed.
  4. If the sewing hook is not correctly timed, turn the machine back on its hinges and loosen the oscillating hook crank clamping screw (M, Fig. 8).
  5. Turn the hook until its point is directly behind the center of the needle, then securely tighten the clamping screw, leaving just enough end play to permit the hook to turn freely.

Removing the Sewing Hook

To remove the oscillating hook slide, presser foot, throat plate, and bobbin case:

  1. Turn the machine over on its hinges.
  2. Take out the screw (N, Fig. 8) and remove the feed dog.
  3. Loosen the set screw (P, Fig. 8) and lift out the bobbin case position bracket (F, Fig. 8).
  4. Loosen the oscillating hook crank clamping screw (O, Fig. 8).
  5. Also loosen the presser bar bracket screw (M, Fig. 7) and raise the presser bar high enough to permit the sewing hook to be lifted from the machine.

Adjusting the Bobbin Case Position Bracket

If it becomes necessary to adjust the bobbin case position bracket to obtain the proper thread space between the bobbin case and bobbin case bracket:

  1. Loosen the screw (E, Fig. 3).
  2. Move the bracket until there is between .010 to .015 of an inch space at the heel of the bobbin case and the cushion spring.
  3. Then securely tighten the screw (E, Fig. 3).

Maintenance Overview

While this manual primarily focuses on timing and adjustments, it serves as a critical resource for maintaining the mechanical integrity of your Singer 66 machine. Regular cleaning and lubrication, in conjunction with correct timing, will ensure smooth operation and extend the life of the sewing machine. Refer to the specific sections within the manual for detailed maintenance procedures related to the hook and needle mechanisms.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Many common sewing machine problems, such as skipped stitches, thread breakage, or uneven tension, can often be traced back to incorrect timing or improper adjustments of the needle and hook mechanisms. This manual provides the necessary information to diagnose and correct these fundamental mechanical issues. If problems persist after following the timing and adjustment procedures, consult a comprehensive service manual or a qualified technician.
