2. Setup

Before using your Kingston Ironkey Keypad 200, you must set up an Administrator PIN. This PIN is crucial for accessing the drive and managing user accounts. Refer to the Quick Start Guide included with your product for detailed, step-by-step instructions on initial setup.

Initial PIN Setup:

  1. Charge the Drive: Connect the drive to a USB port to ensure it has sufficient power for setup.
  2. Enter Admin Mode: Follow the specific key sequence on the keypad to enter Administrator mode.
  3. Set Administrator PIN: Create a strong alphanumeric PIN (minimum 7 characters, maximum 15 characters) using the keypad. The PIN must contain at least one number, one uppercase letter, and one lowercase letter.
  4. Confirm PIN: Re-enter the Administrator PIN to confirm.
  5. Exit Admin Mode: Follow the key sequence to exit Administrator mode and lock the drive.

Note: It is highly recommended to write down your Administrator PIN and store it in a secure, separate location. If the Administrator PIN is forgotten, data on the drive may become inaccessible.

3. Operating Instructions

Once the Administrator PIN is set, you can unlock and use your Ironkey Keypad 200. The drive can be unlocked using either the Administrator PIN or a User PIN (if configured).

Unlocking the Drive:

  1. Press the Key Button: Press the KEY button on the keypad. The LED indicator will turn solid blue.
  2. Enter PIN: Enter your Administrator or User PIN using the alphanumeric keypad.
  3. Confirm PIN: Press the KEY button again.
  4. Connect to Host: Within 30 seconds of successful PIN entry, plug the drive into a USB port on your computer or compatible device. The LED will turn solid green, indicating the drive is unlocked and ready for use.

If the drive is not connected within 30 seconds, it will automatically re-lock. If an incorrect PIN is entered, the LED will flash red. After 10 consecutive incorrect PIN attempts, the drive will initiate a crypto-erase, permanently deleting all data and resetting the drive to factory defaults.

Locking the Drive:

To secure your data, always lock the drive when not in use.

  • Safely Eject: Safely eject the drive from your operating system.
  • Disconnect: Disconnect the drive from the USB port. The drive will automatically lock.
  • Manual Lock: Alternatively, while the drive is connected and unlocked, press and hold the KEY button for 3 seconds to manually lock it.

4. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable operation of your Kingston Ironkey Keypad 200.

Care and Handling:

  • Physical Protection: Always use the provided protective sleeve when the drive is not in use to prevent damage to the USB connector and keypad.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the keypad and casing. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Temperature: Store and operate the drive within its specified temperature ranges (refer to Specifications section). Extreme temperatures can affect performance and durability.
  • Avoid Liquids: Keep the drive away from water and other liquids. While robust, it is not waterproof.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the Kingston official website for any available firmware updates to ensure optimal performance and security.

5. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Ironkey Keypad 200.

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • Drive Not Unlocking (LED Flashes Red):
    - Ensure you are entering the correct PIN. Double-check for typos or incorrect characters.
    - If multiple incorrect attempts occur, the drive may lock itself temporarily. Wait a few moments and try again.
    - Remember that 10 consecutive incorrect PIN entries will crypto-erase the drive.
  • Drive Not Recognized by Computer:
    - Ensure the drive was unlocked successfully (solid green LED) before plugging it into the USB port.
    - Make sure the drive is fully inserted into the USB port.
    - Try a different USB port on your computer.
    - Try connecting the drive to a different computer to rule out a computer-specific issue.
    - Ensure your computer's USB drivers are up to date.
  • Forgotten PIN:
    - If the Administrator PIN is forgotten, there is no recovery method to access the data. The drive must be reset to factory defaults, which will crypto-erase all data. This is a security feature to prevent unauthorized access.
    - If a User PIN is forgotten, the Administrator can reset it without losing data. Refer to the full user manual for Administrator functions.
  • Slow Data Transfer Speeds:
    - Ensure you are using a USB 3.0 (or higher) compatible port for optimal speeds.
    - Large file transfers can naturally take longer.
