Setup and Molding Instructions
Proper molding is essential for comfort and effectiveness. Follow these steps carefully:
- Prepare Water: Heat enough water to fill a mug to boiling. Also, prepare a separate bowl of room temperature water.
- Attach Handle: Snap the included molding handle onto the mouthpiece tray. This helps in handling the device during the molding process.
- Soften Mouthpiece: Submerge the mouthpiece (with the handle attached) into the boiling hot water for approximately 40-45 seconds. The material will become soft and pliable. Do not leave it in hot water for too long as it may become too soft to mold properly.
- Cool Briefly: Carefully remove the mouthpiece from the hot water and immediately transfer it to the room temperature water for 1-2 seconds. This cools the outer layer enough to prevent burns when placed in your mouth.
- Mold to Teeth: Place the softened mouthpiece into your mouth, aligning it with your upper teeth. Bite down gently and press firmly around your mouth with your fingers (lips and cheeks) to create a custom impression of your teeth. Maintain pressure for 20-30 seconds.
- Set the Mold: Remove the mouthpiece from your mouth and immediately place it back into the room temperature water for 5 minutes to allow the material to harden and set the impression.
- Repeat for Lower Tray: Follow the same steps for the lower mouthpiece tray.
If the initial mold is not satisfactory, you can repeat the molding process up to 3 times.

Operating Instructions
Once molded, the SmartGuard device is ready for nightly use. The device works by gently holding your lower jaw slightly forward, which helps to open your airway and reduce snoring.
- Adjusting the Fit: The device features adjustable connecting straps that allow you to customize the forward position of your jaw. Experiment with different strap lengths to find the most comfortable and effective setting for you. The straps are typically numbered, with higher numbers indicating a greater forward adjustment.
- Initial Adjustment Period: It is normal to experience some initial discomfort or jaw soreness as your mouth adjusts to the device. This typically subsides within a few days to a few weeks. If discomfort persists, try adjusting to a less aggressive strap size.
- Wearing the Device: Insert the device before going to sleep. Ensure both the upper and lower trays are securely seated on your teeth.
- Breathing and Movement: The SmartGuard device is designed to allow natural mouth movement, including opening and closing your mouth, talking, and even drinking water, while wearing it.

Maintenance and Cleaning
To maintain hygiene and prolong the life of your SmartGuard device, follow these cleaning instructions:
- Daily Cleaning: After each use, rinse the mouthpiece thoroughly with cool water. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and mild, non-abrasive soap (like dish soap) to gently brush all surfaces, paying attention to the grooves and crevices where saliva and debris might accumulate.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Ensure all soap residue is completely rinsed off before storing.
- Weekly Deep Clean: For a more thorough cleaning, you may use a denture or retainer cleaning tablet (follow the product's instructions for use).
- Storage: Store the clean and dry mouthpiece in the provided storage case to protect it from dust and damage. Ensure the case is clean and dry before placing the device inside.
Avoid using abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, or very hot water, as these can damage the material and affect the fit of your device.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause / Solution |
|---|---|
| Device is uncomfortable or causes jaw soreness. | This is common during the initial adjustment period (up to 3 weeks). Try using a less aggressive (shorter) connecting strap. If discomfort persists, discontinue use and consult a dental professional. |
| Still snoring while using the device. | The current jaw advancement may not be sufficient. Gradually try a more aggressive (longer) connecting strap. Ensure the device is properly molded and seated on your teeth. |
| Device does not stay in place. | The mouthpiece may not be properly molded. Re-mold the device following the setup instructions carefully, ensuring firm biting pressure to capture a clear impression of your teeth. |
| Difficulty breathing through the nose. | The device is designed to open the airway. If nasal breathing is difficult, consider using nasal strips or a nasal dilator in conjunction with the SmartGuard device. Consult a doctor if breathing difficulties persist. |
| Excessive salivation. | This is a common initial side effect as your mouth adjusts to the device. It typically subsides within a few nights of consistent use. |
