Setup and First Use
Unpacking and Initial Cleaning
- Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Retain packaging for future storage or transport.
- Wash the inner pot, lid, and accessories (such as the sealing ring and steam rack) with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
- Wipe the exterior of the cooker base with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the cooker base in water.
Component Identification
Familiarize yourself with the main components:
- Cooker Base: Houses the heating element and control panel.
- Inner Pot: Food-grade stainless steel cooking pot with a tri-ply bottom.
- Lid: Features the steam release handle, float valve, and anti-block shield.
- Sealing Ring: Silicone ring located on the underside of the lid, essential for pressure cooking.
- Condensation Collector: Small cup at the back of the cooker base to collect condensation.
Placement
Place the Instant Pot RIO on a stable, level surface away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Ensure adequate clearance around the unit for proper ventilation, especially during steam release.
Operating Instructions
General Operation
- Ensure the inner pot is correctly seated in the cooker base.
- Add ingredients to the inner pot according to your recipe. Do not fill above the MAX PC (Pressure Cooking) line for pressure cooking, or the MAX line for other cooking methods.
- Place the lid on the cooker base, aligning the triangle mark on the lid with the triangle mark on the cooker base. Rotate the lid clockwise until it locks into place.
- Ensure the steam release handle is set to the "Sealing" position for pressure cooking.
- Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
Using Smart Programs
The Instant Pot RIO features 13 customizable Smart Programs for various cooking functions. To use a Smart Program:
- Press the desired Smart Program button (e.g., "Pressure Cook", "Rice", "Sauté").
- Adjust cooking time using the '+' and '-' buttons. Some programs allow temperature adjustments (Low, Med, High).
- Press "Start" to begin cooking. The display will show "On" and then "Preheat" as the cooker builds pressure or heats up.
- The cooking progress indicator will keep you updated on the cooking status.

Steam Release
After pressure cooking, steam must be released before opening the lid. There are two methods:
- Quick Release (QR): Carefully press the Easy-Release switch away from the steam vent. Steam will rapidly escape. Do not place hands or face over the steam vent. Use QR for delicate foods or when a recipe specifies.
- Natural Release (NR): Allow the cooker to cool down naturally. The float valve will drop on its own. This method is suitable for meats and dishes with high liquid content.

Sauté Function
The Sauté function allows you to brown ingredients directly in the inner pot before pressure cooking. This model features an upgraded anti-spin inner pot for easier stirring.

Maintenance and Cleaning
Regular cleaning ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Instant Pot RIO.
- Inner Pot: The stainless steel inner pot is dishwasher-safe. For stubborn food residue, soak with warm soapy water before cleaning.
- Lid: The stainless steel lid is dishwasher-safe. Remove the sealing ring and anti-block shield for thorough cleaning. Ensure all components are dry before reassembling.
- Sealing Ring: Wash with warm soapy water. It is normal for the sealing ring to absorb odors from food; soaking in vinegar or baking soda solution can help. Replace the sealing ring every 12-18 months, or sooner if it shows signs of damage or deformation.
- Condensation Collector: Remove and empty the condensation collector after each use. Wash with warm soapy water and dry.
- Cooker Base: Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. Never immerse the cooker base in water or other liquids.

Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Cooker not building pressure / Float valve not rising. | Steam release handle not in "Sealing" position; sealing ring improperly installed or damaged; insufficient liquid; float valve stuck. | Ensure steam release handle is set to "Sealing". Check sealing ring for proper placement and damage. Add more liquid if necessary. Gently tap the float valve to ensure it moves freely. |
| "Burn" message on display. | Food stuck to the bottom of the inner pot; insufficient liquid; thick sauces. | Cancel cooking, perform quick release. Remove inner pot, check for burnt food and clean. Add more liquid and ensure food is not directly touching the bottom. Avoid overly thick sauces without thinning. |
| Takes too long to heat up or reach pressure. | Insufficient power; large volume of cold food; lid not sealed properly. | Ensure the cooker is plugged into a dedicated outlet. Allow more time for larger quantities or colder ingredients. Verify the lid is fully sealed and the steam release handle is in the "Sealing" position. |
| Steam/food blasting from vent during Quick Release. | Overfilling the pot; food particles in the vent; thick liquid. | Do not overfill the inner pot. Ensure the steam release valve and anti-block shield are clean. For foamy or thick liquids, use Natural Release or intermittent Quick Release. |
