2. Safety Instructions

Operating any power tool requires strict adherence to safety guidelines to prevent injury and damage. Always prioritize your safety and the safety of others.

2.1 General Safety Precautions

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
  • Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders, especially children and pets.
  • Operate the log splitter on a firm, level surface to prevent tipping.
  • Never operate the machine under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication that may impair judgment.
  • Keep hands and feet away from moving parts, especially the splitting wedge.

2.2 Electrical Safety

  • Extension Cords: It is critical to avoid using coiled extension cords or those with a cross-section smaller than 2.5 mm². Using inadequate extension cords can cause motor damage and invalidate the warranty.
  • Extension cords should be as short as possible and have a cross-section appropriate for their length. For lengths of 5 to 10 meters, a minimum cross-section of 2.5 mm² is recommended.
  • For applications requiring greater length, consider using a gasoline-powered machine instead of an electric one to ensure optimal performance and prevent electrical issues.
  • Ensure the power supply matches the voltage requirements of the log splitter.

2.3 Operational Safety Features

  • The SAKAWA AS15TE features dual controls, requiring both hands to operate simultaneously. This design ensures hands are kept away from the splitting area during operation.
  • Robust side supports are integrated to securely hold the log in place during the splitting process.

4. Setup

Before operating the log splitter, ensure it is properly set up and all components are secure.

4.1 Unpacking and Assembly

  1. Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
  2. Refer to the assembly diagrams (if provided separately) to attach any unmounted parts, such as handles or wheels.
  3. Ensure all bolts and fasteners are tightened securely.

4.2 Positioning the Log Splitter

  1. Place the log splitter on a firm, level, and stable surface.
  2. Ensure there is ample space around the machine for safe operation and log handling.
  3. The three-position system allows for adjusting the machine's orientation. Select the desired position (e.g., horizontal or vertical) and ensure it is securely fixed before use.

4.3 Electrical Connection

  1. Connect the log splitter to a suitable power outlet using a properly rated extension cord, if necessary. Refer to section 2.2 for extension cord requirements.
  2. Verify that the power switch is in the 'OFF' position before plugging in the machine.

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for safe and effective log splitting.

5.1 Preparing Logs

  • The SAKAWA AS15TE can split logs with an approximate diameter of 5 to 35 centimeters, depending on wood type and knot presence.
  • The maximum log length is 52 centimeters. Do not attempt to split logs exceeding this length.
  • Ensure logs are free of nails, wire, or other foreign objects that could damage the splitter.
  • Cut logs squarely to prevent them from slipping during splitting.

5.2 Splitting Procedure

  1. Place a log firmly on the splitting bed, ensuring it rests securely against the side supports.
  2. With both hands, simultaneously engage the dual control levers. This will activate the hydraulic piston, pushing the log into the splitting wedge.
  3. Maintain pressure on both levers until the log is fully split or the wedge reaches its maximum extension.
  4. Release both levers to retract the splitting wedge.
  5. Remove the split log pieces and repeat the process for additional logs.

5.3 Important Operating Notes

  • Never force the machine. If a log does not split easily, reposition it or consider a smaller log.
  • Do not attempt to split multiple logs at once.
  • If the log becomes jammed, release the controls, turn off the machine, and carefully remove the jammed log using appropriate tools, never your hands.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your log splitter.

6.1 Hydraulic Oil

  • The SAKAWA AS15TE includes hydraulic oil. Check the hydraulic oil level regularly before each use.
  • Refer to the machine's specific instructions for checking and refilling the hydraulic oil. Use only recommended hydraulic oil (e.g., FH-46 EP or equivalent).
  • Change the hydraulic oil according to the manufacturer's recommendations or if it appears discolored or contaminated.

6.2 General Cleaning and Inspection

  • After each use, clean the log splitter to remove wood chips, sawdust, and debris.
  • Inspect all bolts, nuts, and fasteners for tightness. Tighten any loose components.
  • Check the hydraulic hoses for any signs of wear, cracks, or leaks. Replace damaged hoses immediately.
  • Inspect the splitting wedge for damage or dullness. Sharpen or replace if necessary.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your log splitter.

7.1 Motor Does Not Start

  • Check Power Connection: Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into a functional outlet.
  • Extension Cord: Verify that the extension cord meets the specified requirements (2.5 mm² minimum cross-section for 5-10m length). An inadequate cord can prevent the motor from starting or cause damage.
  • Circuit Breaker: Check if the circuit breaker has tripped.

7.2 Insufficient Splitting Force

  • Hydraulic Oil Level: Check the hydraulic oil level and refill if necessary. Low oil can reduce splitting power.
  • Air in Hydraulic System: If the system has air, it may need to be bled. Consult a qualified technician if unsure.
  • Log Size/Hardness: Ensure logs are within the recommended diameter and length. Extremely hard or knotty wood may require multiple attempts or a different approach.

7.3 Log Jams

  • Release Controls: Immediately release both control levers to retract the wedge.
  • Power Off: Turn off the log splitter and disconnect it from the power supply.
  • Careful Removal: Use a wooden wedge or a mallet to carefully free the jammed log. Never use your hands or attempt to pry it out while the machine is powered on.
