4. Setup and Assembly
- Clean and Sanitize: Before first use, disassemble and clean all parts that come into contact with breast milk (breast shields, valves, diaphragms, connectors, milk collection containers, nipples) according to the "Maintenance and Cleaning" section.
- Assemble Breast Shield Kit:
- Insert the valve into the bottom of the breast shield connector.
- Place the diaphragm onto the top of the breast shield connector, ensuring a secure seal.
- Screw the milk collection container onto the breast shield connector.
- Attach the appropriate size breast shield (21mm, 24mm, or 27mm) to the breast shield connector.
- Connect Tubing: Attach one end of the tubing to the breast shield connector and the other end to the port on the Motif Duo pump unit. For double pumping, repeat for the second set of components.
- Power On: Connect the 12V power adapter to the pump unit and a power outlet to charge the internal battery or operate directly. The battery lasts over 2.5 hours on a full charge.

5.1. Controls and Display
- Power Button: Press to turn the pump on or off.
- Mode Button: Cycle through Massage, Expression, and Memory Modes.
- +/- Buttons: Adjust suction intensity (10 levels).
- LCD Screen: Displays current mode, suction level, battery indicator, and timer.
5.2. Pumping Modes
- Massage Mode: This mode helps stimulate milk let-down by mimicking a baby's rapid suckling pattern. It is recommended to start your pumping session in this mode for 2-3 minutes before switching to Expression Mode.
- Expression Mode: Once milk let-down occurs, switch to Expression Mode. This mode works to express milk from the breast as efficiently as possible with slower, stronger suction cycles. Adjust the suction level to your comfort.
- Memory Mode: The pump can remember your preferred settings. Consult the full manual for specific instructions on setting and recalling memory preferences.
5.3. Pumping Session
- Ensure breast shields are centered on your nipples, creating a comfortable seal.
- Turn on the pump. It will typically start in Massage Mode.
- After 2-3 minutes or when milk flow begins, switch to Expression Mode.
- Adjust the suction level using the +/- buttons to a comfortable yet effective setting. Pumping should not be painful.
- Pump for approximately 15-20 minutes per session, or until breasts feel empty. The pump has an automatic shutoff after 30 minutes.
- When finished, turn off the pump, gently remove breast shields, and cap milk collection containers.

6. Maintenance and Cleaning
Proper cleaning and maintenance are crucial for hygiene and the longevity of your breast pump.
6.1. Cleaning Parts That Contact Breast Milk
Immediately after each use, disassemble and clean all parts that come into contact with breast milk (breast shields, valves, diaphragms, connectors, milk collection containers, nipples).
- Rinse parts under cool running water to remove milk residue.
- Wash parts in warm, soapy water using a clean brush dedicated for feeding items.
- Rinse thoroughly under clean running water.
- Air dry on a clean paper towel or drying rack. Do not use a cloth towel as it may transfer germs.
- Alternatively, parts can be washed on the top rack of a dishwasher.
6.2. Sanitizing
Sanitize parts at least once a day, especially for infants younger than 3 months, those with weakened immune systems, or those born prematurely.
- Boiling: Place disassembled, cleaned parts in a pot of boiling water for 5 minutes.
- Steam Sterilizer: Use a microwave or electric steam sterilizer according to manufacturer instructions.
6.3. Cleaning the Pump Unit and Tubing
- The Motif Duo features a closed system with backflow protection, meaning milk will not enter the tubing or pump motor. Therefore, the tubing and pump unit do not require cleaning unless milk or condensation is observed inside the tubing.
- Wipe the exterior of the pump unit with a clean, damp cloth. Do not immerse in water.
- If milk or condensation is in the tubing, replace the tubing. Do not attempt to clean and reuse.
7. Troubleshooting
