Setup
1. Attaching the Chuck to the Lathe Spindle:
- Verify Spindle Thread: Before attachment, confirm your wood lathe's spindle thread size. The chuck has a 1" x 8TPI thread. If your lathe has a 3/4" x 16TPI spindle, use the included adapter.
- Clean Threads: Ensure both the lathe spindle threads and the chuck/adapter threads are clean and free of debris.
- Attach Adapter (if needed): If using the 3/4" x 16TPI adapter, thread it securely onto the lathe spindle first. Hand-tighten firmly.
- Mount Chuck: Thread the chuck body onto the lathe spindle (or adapter). Rotate the chuck clockwise until it is hand-tight against the spindle shoulder. Do not overtighten with tools.

2. Installing Jaws:
- Select Jaws: Choose the appropriate jaw set (Dovetail, Step, Pin, or Wide) for your specific turning project.
- Align Jaws: Each jaw is numbered (1-4). Align the corresponding numbered jaw with the numbered slot on the chuck body.
- Secure Jaws: Insert the jaw screws through the holes in the jaws and into the chuck body. Use the provided 4mm T-Allen wrench to tighten the screws. Ensure all four jaws are securely fastened and move smoothly when the chuck is operated.
Operating the Chuck
The VINWOX SCR4-4-SET is a self-centering chuck, meaning all four jaws move simultaneously and equally when adjusted, ensuring the workpiece remains centered.
1. Gripping a Workpiece:
- Open Jaws: Insert the tightening levers into the chuck's adjustment holes and rotate them to open the jaws wider than your workpiece.
- Position Workpiece: Place the workpiece firmly against the chuck jaws. Ensure it is seated squarely and deeply enough for a secure grip.
- Close Jaws: Rotate the tightening levers to close the jaws until they firmly grip the workpiece. Apply sufficient pressure to prevent slippage during turning.
- Verify Grip: Gently attempt to rotate the workpiece by hand to confirm it is securely held.

2. Using Different Jaw Sets:
- 2" Dovetail Jaws: Ideal for gripping tenons on bowls or spigots for internal expansion.
- Step Jaws: Provide multiple gripping diameters for both internal and external holding, useful for various workpiece sizes.
- 1" Pin Jaws: Excellent for small workpieces, especially for drilling or turning small finials, offering a strong grip on small spigots.
