Operation

Patient Seating and Securing:

  1. Ensure the chair is stable and the dual manual wheel locks are engaged.
  2. Assist the patient to sit comfortably in the chair, ensuring their back is against the backrest.
  3. Secure the patient using the provided safety belts across the chest and lap. Adjust straps for a snug fit without causing discomfort.

Stair Descent (Downward Movement):

The EZ LITE chair utilizes a pressure-reliant track system for controlled descent. This system grips and glides along the stairs, reducing stress on the operator.

  1. Position the chair at the top of the staircase with the tracks aligned with the first step.
  2. One operator should hold the upper control handle, maintaining a firm grip. The second operator can assist from the front or side, providing additional stability and patient reassurance.
  3. Gently tilt the chair backward until the tracks make contact with the stairs.
  4. Control the downward speed by adjusting the amount of applied pressure on the stairs through the tracks. More pressure slows descent, less pressure allows faster movement.
  5. Maintain a steady, controlled pace, ensuring the patient remains comfortable and secure.

Stair Ascent (Upward Movement):

For non-emergency ascent with an occupant, the chair must be lifted. This requires significant operator strength.

  • Position one operator at the lower lift handles and another at the upper control handle.
  • Coordinate lifting to raise the chair and patient over each step.
  • This method is physically demanding and should only be performed by adequately strong and trained individuals.

General Transport (Flat Surfaces):

On flat surfaces, the chair can be rolled using its wheels.

  • Ensure the chair is upright and the tracks are not engaged.
  • Disengage the wheel locks.
  • Push or pull the chair using the handles.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your EZ LITE Evacuation Stair Chair.

  • Difficulty unfolding/folding: Ensure all locking mechanisms are disengaged. Apply gentle, even pressure. Do not force components.
  • Tracks not gripping stairs effectively: Verify the tracks are clean and free of debris. Ensure sufficient downward pressure is applied during descent.
  • Wheels not rolling smoothly: Check for debris in the wheel mechanisms. Lubricate axles if necessary. Ensure wheel locks are disengaged.
  • Patient discomfort: Re-adjust safety belts for a secure yet comfortable fit. Ensure the headrest and footrest are properly positioned.
  • Excessive operator strain: Ensure proper technique is used for stair descent, relying on the track system. For stair ascent, ensure adequate personnel and lifting technique. Practice with a non-occupant or lighter load first.
