3. Safety Information

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be deadly. This detector is designed to provide early warning of CO presence. It is crucial to understand that this device is not a substitute for proper maintenance of fuel-burning appliances, including ventilation and exhaust systems. Always ensure adequate ventilation in areas where fuel-burning appliances are used.

3.1 Important Safety Precautions

  • Do not paint the detector. Paint can clog the vents and interfere with the sensor's ability to detect CO.
  • Do not block the air intake or alarm horn.
  • Test the detector regularly as described in the "Operating Instructions" section.
  • Never ignore a CO alarm. Follow the "What to do if the alarm sounds" guidelines immediately.

3.2 What to do if the alarm sounds

  1. Immediately move to fresh air outdoors or open all doors and windows to ventilate the area.
  2. Call your emergency services, fire department, or gas supplier from a fresh air location.
  3. Do not re-enter the premises until the CO has dissipated and the cause of the CO has been identified and corrected.
  4. Seek medical attention for anyone experiencing symptoms of CO poisoning (headache, nausea, dizziness).

4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Battery Installation

The Hembisen CO Detector operates on batteries (not included). To install or replace batteries:

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
  2. Insert the required batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2 Optimal Placement

For optimal detection, place the carbon monoxide detector in areas where CO is likely to accumulate or where occupants spend significant time. Recommended locations include:

  • Near sleeping areas.
  • On each level of your home.
  • Within 10 feet of fuel-burning appliances (furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, gas stoves).
  • In rooms with fireplaces or wood-burning stoves.
  • In kitchens, especially if gas appliances are present.

Avoid placing the detector:

  • Directly above or next to fuel-burning appliances.
  • In direct sunlight or near heat sources.
  • In areas with high humidity (e.g., bathrooms).
  • Near vents, doors, or windows where air currents might dilute CO.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On and Self-Test

Upon battery installation, the detector will perform a self-test. The digital display will illuminate, and the alarm may briefly sound, indicating proper function. The display will then show "000" or enter power-saving mode.

5.2 Digital Display Readings

The digital display shows the current carbon monoxide concentration in parts per million (ppm). In normal conditions (no CO detected), the display will typically be off to conserve power. When CO is detected, the display will show the concentration level.

5.3 Testing the Alarm

Press the "TEST" button located on the front of the detector. The unit will perform a functional test, sounding the alarm and illuminating indicator lights. This confirms the alarm and sensor are working correctly. Test the alarm weekly.

5.4 Alarm Indication

When carbon monoxide is detected at dangerous levels, the detector will:

  • Emit a loud 85-decibel alarm sound.
  • Flash a red indicator light.
  • Display the detected CO concentration on the digital screen.

5.5 Power Saving Mode

To extend battery life, the device's digital display will automatically turn off when no carbon monoxide is detected in the surrounding environment. The detector remains active and will illuminate the display and sound the alarm if CO is detected.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Regular Testing

Test your Hembisen CO Detector weekly by pressing the "TEST" button. This ensures the alarm and sensor are functioning correctly.

6.2 Cleaning

Clean the exterior of the detector regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use cleaning agents or solvents, as these can damage the unit or interfere with the sensor. Do not paint the detector.

6.3 Battery Replacement

When the batteries are low, the detector will typically indicate this with a low battery warning (e.g., a chirp or a specific indicator on the display). Replace all batteries immediately with new ones of the specified type.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Alarm sounds without visible CO source.Low levels of CO, sensor malfunction, or false alarm due to interfering substances.Ventilate the area. If alarm persists, evacuate and call emergency services. If it's a false alarm, ensure proper placement away from strong fumes (e.g., paint, cleaning products).
No display/unit appears off.Power saving mode, dead batteries, or unit malfunction.Press the "TEST" button to wake the display. Replace batteries if necessary. If still unresponsive, the unit may be faulty.
Low battery warning (chirp/indicator).Batteries are low and need replacement.Replace all batteries immediately with new ones of the correct type.
Alarm does not sound during test.Dead batteries, unit malfunction, or test button issue.Ensure fresh batteries are installed. If the problem persists, the unit may be faulty and require replacement.
