2. Safety Information

Always follow general power tool safety guidelines when using scroll saw blades. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or damage to the tool.

  • Eye Protection: Always wear safety glasses or goggles to protect against flying debris.
  • Hand Protection: Use appropriate gloves to protect hands from sharp blades and splinters.
  • Work Area: Ensure your work area is clean, well-lit, and free from obstructions.
  • Blade Condition: Inspect blades for damage or dullness before each use. Replace worn or damaged blades immediately.
  • Power Tool Safety: Disconnect power from the scroll saw before changing blades or performing maintenance.
  • Material Compatibility: Use the correct blade TPI (Teeth Per Inch) for the material being cut to prevent blade breakage and ensure clean cuts.
  • Secure Workpiece: Always secure the workpiece firmly to prevent movement during cutting.

4. Setup: Blade Installation

These blades are designed for scroll saws that accept 5-inch pin-end blades, including models from Wen (3921, 3922), Dremel, TACKLIFE, Shop Fox, SKIL, Rikon, Sears Craftsman, Penn State, Delta, and Ryobi SC165VS.

  1. Power Disconnection: Ensure your scroll saw is unplugged from the power source before attempting any blade changes.
  2. Remove Old Blade (if applicable): Loosen the blade tension and carefully remove the old blade from both the upper and lower blade clamps.
  3. Select New Blade: Choose the appropriate TPI blade for your material and cutting requirements.
  4. Install Lower Pin: Insert one pin end of the new blade into the lower blade clamp of your scroll saw. Ensure the teeth are pointing downwards towards the table.
  5. Install Upper Pin: Carefully pull the upper arm of the scroll saw down and insert the other pin end of the blade into the upper blade clamp.
  6. Tension Adjustment: Apply the correct tension to the blade according to your scroll saw's manufacturer instructions. Proper tension is crucial for clean cuts and to prevent blade breakage. The blade should produce a clear, high-pitched sound when plucked.
  7. Test Run: Plug in the scroll saw and perform a brief test run on a scrap piece of material to ensure the blade is installed correctly and tensioned properly.

5. Operating Instructions

Using the correct technique and blade for your material will yield the best results and extend blade life.

  • Material Selection:
    • Wood: Use lower TPI blades (10-15 TPI) for thicker, softer woods and faster cuts. Higher TPI blades (18-24 TPI) are for thinner, harder woods and intricate designs.
    • Plastics: Generally, higher TPI blades (15-24 TPI) are recommended for plastics to prevent melting and achieve cleaner edges.
    • Soft Metals (e.g., Copper): Use the highest TPI blades (18-24 TPI) for non-ferrous metals, applying light pressure and possibly a lubricant.
  • Cutting Speed: Adjust the scroll saw's speed according to the material. Slower speeds are typically for harder materials and intricate cuts, while faster speeds are for softer materials and straight cuts.
  • Feed Rate: Allow the blade to do the cutting. Do not force the material into the blade. A steady, moderate feed rate will prevent overheating and blade deflection.
  • Blade Cooling: For prolonged cutting, especially in plastics or metals, consider using an air blower or cooling agent if your scroll saw supports it.
  • Intricate Cuts: For tight curves and detailed work, use a higher TPI blade and a slower feed rate.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your blades.

  • Cleaning: After use, remove any accumulated sawdust or debris from the blades using a brush or compressed air.
  • Storage: Store blades in their original packaging or a dedicated blade holder to protect the teeth from damage and prevent accidental cuts. Keep them in a dry environment to prevent rust.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect blades for signs of wear, dullness, or damage. A dull blade will cause burning, rough cuts, and increased strain on your scroll saw. Replace blades as needed.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Blade breaks frequentlyIncorrect blade tension, forcing the cut, wrong TPI for material, dull blade.Adjust blade tension, reduce feed rate, select appropriate TPI, replace blade.
