1. Safety Information
Read and understand all safety information and operating instructions before using this multimeter. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or damage to the meter.
- Always ensure the multimeter is in good working condition and test leads are not damaged before use.
- Do not apply more than the rated voltage, which is 600V for this device, between the terminals or between any terminal and ground.
- Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
- Always disconnect the test leads from the circuit before changing functions.
- Replace the battery immediately when the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.
- Do not operate the meter with the case open or if the battery cover is not securely closed.
- This device is rated for CAT III 600V. Adhere to appropriate safety standards for the measurement category.
2. Product Overview
The TOTAL Digital Multimeter TMT460012 is a compact, hand-powered device designed for measuring various electrical parameters including DC/AC voltage, DC current, resistance, and continuity. It features a clear digital display and a rotary switch for easy function selection.

2.1 Components
- LCD Display: Shows measurement readings and indicators.
- Rotary Function Switch: Used to select the desired measurement function (e.g., V~, V=, A=, Ω, Continuity).
- Input Jacks:
- COM (Common): For the black (negative) test lead.
- VΩmA: For the red (positive) test lead when measuring voltage, resistance, or small currents (mA).
- 10A: For the red (positive) test lead when measuring high currents (up to 10A). This input is fused.
- HOLD Button: Freezes the current reading on the display.
- Test Leads: (Not pictured, but included with the device) Used to connect the multimeter to the circuit under test.
3. Setup
3.1 Battery Installation
The TOTAL TMT460012 multimeter requires two AAA batteries for operation. To install or replace batteries:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screw(s) securing the cover.
- Carefully remove the cover.
- Insert two AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+ and -) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw(s).
3.2 Connecting Test Probes
To prepare the multimeter for measurements:
- Insert the black test lead into the COM (common) jack.
- Insert the red test lead into the VΩmA jack for most measurements (voltage, resistance, continuity, small current).
- For high current measurements (up to 10A), insert the red test lead into the 10A jack.
4. Operating Instructions
Always ensure the correct function is selected and test leads are connected to the appropriate jacks before making any measurements.
4.1 Measuring DC Voltage (V=)
- Set the rotary switch to the desired DC Voltage range (e.g., 200m, 2, 20, 200, 600V). If the voltage is unknown, start with the highest range and decrease as needed.
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Connect the test probes in parallel across the component or circuit to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
4.2 Measuring AC Voltage (V~)
- Set the rotary switch to the desired AC Voltage range (e.g., 200, 600V).
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Connect the test probes in parallel across the AC voltage source.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
4.3 Measuring Resistance (Ω)
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired Resistance range (e.g., 200, 2k, 20k, 200k, 2M, 20MΩ).
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Connect the test probes across the component whose resistance is to be measured.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display. An 'OL' reading indicates an open circuit or a resistance higher than the selected range.
4.4 Continuity Test
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
- Set the rotary switch to the continuity function (often indicated by a buzzer icon).
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Connect the test probes across the component or wire.
- If continuity exists (low resistance), the meter will emit an audible beep.
4.5 Measuring DC Current (A=)
Caution: Never connect the multimeter in parallel for current measurement. Always connect it in series with the load.
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting the meter.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired DC Current range (e.g., 200m, 10A).
- For currents up to 200mA, connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- For currents up to 10A, connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the 10A jack.
- Open the circuit where the current is to be measured and connect the multimeter in series.
- Apply power to the circuit and read the current value on the LCD display.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
To clean the multimeter, wipe the case with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the meter is completely dry before use.
5.2 Battery Replacement
Refer to Section 3.1 for detailed instructions on battery replacement. Always use fresh AAA batteries.
5.3 Fuse Replacement
If the 10A current measurement function stops working, the fuse may need replacement. This should only be performed by qualified personnel.
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and all test leads are disconnected.
- Open the battery compartment cover (refer to Section 3.1).
- Locate the fuse(s) inside the compartment.
- Carefully remove the old fuse and replace it with a new fuse of the exact same type and rating (e.g., F10A/250V for the 10A range).
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it.
6. Troubleshooting
- No display or dim display: Check battery installation and replace batteries if necessary.
- 'OL' (Overload) reading: The measured value exceeds the selected range. Select a higher range or check for an open circuit in resistance mode.
- Incorrect readings: Ensure test leads are properly connected, the correct function is selected, and batteries are not low.
- No current reading on 10A range: Check and replace the fuse if blown (refer to Section 5.3).
