2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when working with bicycle components. Improper installation or use of quick release skewers can lead to serious injury. Adhere to the following safety guidelines:

  • Ensure the quick release lever is fully closed and securely tightened before riding.
  • Regularly inspect skewers for any signs of damage, wear, or bending. Replace damaged skewers immediately.
  • Do not overtighten the skewer nut, as this can damage the hub or frame.
  • Do not lubricate the cam mechanism of the quick release lever, as this can reduce clamping force.
  • Consult a professional bicycle mechanic if you are unsure about any installation or maintenance procedures.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all items are present in your package:

  • 1 x Front Quick Release Skewer (145mm length)
  • 1 x Rear Quick Release Skewer (185mm length)

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install the quick release skewers on your bicycle wheels:

  1. Identify Skewers: The shorter skewer (approximately 145mm) is for the front wheel, and the longer skewer (approximately 185mm) is for the rear wheel.
  2. Disassemble Skewer: Unscrew the end nut from the skewer and remove one of the conical springs. Keep the quick release lever and its spring on the other end of the skewer.
  3. Insert Skewer: Slide the skewer through the hollow axle of your bicycle wheel hub. Ensure the quick release lever is on the non-drive side (left side) for the front wheel and on the non-drive side (left side) for the rear wheel, away from the derailleur.
  4. Attach Spring and Nut: Place the removed conical spring onto the skewer with the narrow end facing the hub. Thread the end nut onto the skewer until it is finger-tight.
  5. Position Wheel: Place the wheel into the bicycle's fork (front) or frame dropouts (rear). Ensure the wheel is centered and fully seated in the dropouts.
  6. Adjust Tension: With the quick release lever in the OPEN position, tighten the end nut until it makes contact with the dropout. Then, close the quick release lever. It should require a firm amount of force to close, leaving an imprint on your palm, but not so much that it's impossible to close. If it's too loose, open the lever, tighten the nut a quarter turn, and try closing again. If it's too tight, open the lever, loosen the nut a quarter turn, and try closing again.
  7. Verify Security: Once the lever is closed, try to pull the wheel out of the dropouts. The wheel should be firmly secured and not move.

5. Operation

The quick release mechanism allows for rapid removal and installation of bicycle wheels without tools. To operate:

  • To Open: Pull the quick release lever away from the wheel until it is fully open. This releases the clamping force. You can then unscrew the end nut a few turns to allow the wheel to drop out of the dropouts.
  • To Close: With the wheel properly seated in the dropouts, push the quick release lever towards the wheel until it is fully closed. Ensure the lever is flush with the fork/frame and points backward or upward, away from potential obstacles.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your quick release skewers:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe down the skewers with a clean cloth to remove dirt and grime.
  • Inspection: Before each ride, quickly check that the quick release levers are securely closed. Annually, or after heavy use, remove the skewers and inspect the shaft for bends, cracks, or corrosion. Check the springs for proper shape and tension.
  • Lubrication: The threaded portion of the skewer shaft can be lightly lubricated with bicycle grease to ensure smooth operation of the nut. Do not lubricate the cam mechanism of the lever.
