Hembisen Carbon Monoxide Detector User Manual

Model: WA996

1. Introduction

The Hembisen Carbon Monoxide Detector (Model WA996) is designed to detect carbon monoxide (CO) gas leaks, providing real-time monitoring and an audible alarm to alert you to dangerous concentrations. This plug-in device features a digital display for easy reading of CO levels and is intended to enhance safety in your home, apartment, or kitchen.

2. Important Safety Information

Please read and understand all instructions before installing and using this carbon monoxide detector. Failure to follow these instructions may result in property damage, injury, or death.

  • This carbon monoxide detector is designed to detect naturally occurring carbon monoxide in the environment. It is not intended to detect other gases, such as natural gas or propane.
  • The detector has an alarm threshold and will only trigger when the concentration of carbon monoxide reaches a certain alarm value.
  • Check the product daily to ensure the green "POWER" light is always on, indicating proper operation.
  • Regularly clean and maintain the product. It is recommended to clean the detector with a soft-bristled brush or vacuum cleaner weekly to prevent dust or debris from affecting its performance.
  • Do not install the detector in very dirty, dusty, or greasy places such as kitchens, garages, or rooms with high humidity. Oil, dust, or household chemicals can contaminate the detector's induction head, causing it to malfunction.

3. Product Overview

The Hembisen Carbon Monoxide Detector is a compact, plug-in device with several key features for effective CO detection.

  5. Power On: Once plugged in, the detector will power on automatically. The green "POWER" light should illuminate.
  6. Initial Self-Test: The device may perform an initial self-test upon power-up.

5. Operating Instructions

Understanding the detector's indicators and functions is crucial for your safety.

Normal Operation:

  • During normal operation, the green "POWER" light will be on.
  • The digital display will show "0000" PPM when no carbon monoxide is detected, and will automatically turn off to save power.
  • If CO is detected, the display will show the current PPM level.

Self-Test Function:

To ensure the detector is working correctly, perform a self-test weekly:

  1. Press and hold the "SELF-TEST" button.
  2. The digital display will show "8888" and the "ALARM" light will flash red.
  3. The audible alarm will sound.
  4. Release the button. The detector will return to normal monitoring mode.

Figure 5.1: The detector features a clear digital display and an 85dB alarm for immediate alerts.

Alarm Conditions:

When carbon monoxide is detected at dangerous levels (Alarm Concentration: 150PPM), the detector will:

  • Flash the red "ALARM" light.
  • Sound the loud 85-decibel alarm.
  • Display the detected CO concentration in PPM on the digital screen.

If the alarm sounds, immediately move to fresh air and call emergency services.

6. Placement Guidelines

Proper placement of your carbon monoxide detector is essential for optimal performance and safety.

Figure 6.1: Recommended placement for Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms in a typical home layout.

  • Install at least one CO detector on each level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
  • Place detectors within 15 feet of all sleeping areas.
  • Consider placing additional detectors in rooms where fuel-burning appliances are located, such as kitchens (away from direct heat/steam) and utility rooms.
  • Install the detector at outlet height, as carbon monoxide mixes with air.
  • Avoid placing the detector in direct sunlight, near vents, fans, or in areas with high humidity or extreme temperatures.
  • Do not install in very dirty, dusty, or greasy places like kitchens, garages, and rooms. Oil, dust or household chemicals can contaminate or on the detector's induction head, making the detector not working properly.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the continued reliability of your Hembisen Carbon Monoxide Detector.

  • Weekly Check: Verify that the green "POWER" light is continuously on. If it is off, check the power connection.
  • Monthly Self-Test: Press the "SELF-TEST" button monthly to confirm the alarm and display are functioning correctly.
  • Cleaning: Clean the detector regularly, at least once a week. Use a soft-bristled brush or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to gently remove dust and debris from the air inlets and the surface of the detector. Do not use cleaning sprays or solvents.
  • Avoid Obstruction: Ensure that the air inlets are not blocked by furniture, curtains, or other objects.

8. Troubleshooting

If your Hembisen Carbon Monoxide Detector is not operating as expected, refer to the following common issues and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No display or power light off.No power to the outlet or device malfunction.Check if the outlet is working by plugging in another device. Try a different outlet. If still no power, the device may be faulty.
Alarm sounds without visible CO source.Actual CO presence, false alarm, or sensor issue.Assume CO is present and evacuate immediately. Call emergency services. After ensuring safety, if it was a false alarm, check placement (avoiding areas with high humidity, strong fumes, or direct heat). Clean the detector.
"FAULT" light is on.Internal device malfunction.Perform a self-test. If the "FAULT" light persists, the detector may need to be replaced.
Detector does not respond to self-test.Device malfunction or button issue.Ensure the device is powered. Press the "SELF-TEST" button firmly. If it still does not respond, the detector may be faulty and require replacement.
Inaccurate readings (e.g., high PPM without CO source).Improper placement, dust/debris, or sensor contamination.Relocate the detector according to placement guidelines (Section 6). Clean the air inlets. Ensure it's not near strong chemicals or excessive humidity.

Note: This specific Hembisen model (WA996) is a Carbon Monoxide Detector only. It is not designed to detect natural gas, propane, or other combustible gases. If you require detection for other gases, please ensure you have the appropriate detector for that purpose.
