Important Safety Information
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when operating or maintaining the spreader. Ensure all fasteners are securely tightened before each use. Do not exceed the maximum load capacity of 2.2 cubic feet. Keep children and pets away from the operating area. This unit is not recommended for use with rock salt products, sand or sand mixes, pelletized lime, lime, or lime powders.
Setup and Assembly
The Chapin 8622B spreader requires minimal assembly. Follow these steps to prepare your unit for use:
- Attach Wheels and Axle: Secure the 14-inch pneumatic tires to the axle. Ensure the oil-impregnated bearings are properly seated to minimize friction.
- Install Hitch Assembly: Connect the powder-coated steel frame to the hopper. Attach the red hitch plate to the frame using the provided bolts. The unit is designed to quickly hook to a hitch on the back of an ATV, UTV, or tractor. Two hitch pins are included for secure attachment.
- Insert Auger: Place the auger into the hopper's opening. Secure it with the auger nut.
- Adjust Gate Opening: Familiarize yourself with the 11 incremental gate adjustments located near the bottom of the hopper. This allows you to dial in the perfect application rate for your preferred seed, fertilizer, or product.

Operating Instructions
The Chapin 8622B spreader is designed for efficient and precise application of various granular materials. Its key feature is the auto-stop dual impeller, which prevents material waste when the unit is not in motion.
- Loading Material: Fill the 2.2 cubic feet capacity hopper with your desired seed, fertilizer, or other granular product. Ensure the material is free of large clumps or foreign objects that could obstruct the flow.
- Setting Application Rate: Use the 11 incremental gate adjustments to set the desired flow rate. Refer to your material's packaging for recommended spreader settings.
- Towing and Spreading: Attach the spreader securely to your ATV, UTV, or tractor using the hitch pins. Begin moving forward at a consistent speed. The auto-stop dual impeller will automatically begin spreading when the wheels turn and stop when the unit is stationary, preventing over-application and burnt lawns.
- Navigating Terrain: The 14-inch pneumatic tires are designed to handle uneven farm land, acreage, and tougher terrain, ensuring stability and preventing the hopper from tipping while spreading.

Figure 4: Auto-Stop Dual Impeller. This image highlights the dual impeller system that automatically stops spreading when the unit is not moving, reducing material waste.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance will extend the life of your Chapin spreader:
- Cleaning: After each use, thoroughly clean the hopper and impeller assembly to prevent material buildup and corrosion. The rust-resistant black poly hopper is easy to clean.
- Lubrication: The bearings are oil-impregnated to minimize friction on the axle and gearbox, requiring minimal additional lubrication. However, inspect regularly for smooth operation.
- Storage: Store the spreader in a dry, covered area to protect it from the elements when not in use.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven material application | Incorrect gate setting, inconsistent towing speed, material clumping. | Adjust gate setting, maintain consistent speed, break up clumps in hopper. |
| Impeller not spinning or material not spreading | Gearbox issue, material obstruction, wheels not turning. | Check for obstructions, ensure wheels are engaged and turning. If gearbox issue, contact customer support. |
| Spreader tipping during operation | Uneven terrain, excessive speed on turns, improper loading. | Reduce speed on uneven terrain and turns, ensure even material distribution in hopper. |
