1. Setup
1.1 Unpacking and Assembly
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure all parts are present before beginning assembly. Refer to the included assembly diagram for detailed instructions on attaching the handle and chute.

Figure 1: The PowerSmart PS21 snow blower with its handle folded, illustrating its compact design for storage. Assembly involves unfolding and securing the handle.
1.2 Fuel and Oil
This snow blower is equipped with a 4-cycle OHV engine. It requires unleaded gasoline and 5W-30 engine oil. Always use fresh, clean fuel and oil. Do not mix oil with gasoline.
- Oil: Fill the oil reservoir with 5W-30 engine oil. Check the oil level before each use.
- Fuel: Fill the fuel tank with fresh unleaded gasoline. Avoid overfilling.
Important Safety Note: Always operate in a well-ventilated area due to gasoline engine emissions. Keep hands and feet away from moving parts. Wear protective equipment such as gloves and eye protection.
2. Operation
2.1 Starting the Engine
- Ensure the plastic key is fully inserted into the ignition slot.
- Press the priming bulb approximately three times to prime the carburetor.
- Move the choke lever all the way to the left (choke ON position).
- Pull the recoil starter handle firmly until the engine starts.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the right (choke OFF position) as the engine warms up.
2.2 Clearing Snow
The PowerSmart PS21 is designed for efficient snow clearing with a 21-inch clearing width and 12.5-inch intake height. It can handle snow depths from 1 inch to 8 inches.

Figure 2: An individual operating the PowerSmart PS21 snow blower to clear a snowy driveway. The machine effectively throws snow away from the path.
Push the snow blower forward at a steady pace. The 4-paddle rubber auger will shred and throw snow up to 35 feet. For optimal performance, avoid forcing the machine through excessively deep or heavy snow. Take narrower passes if necessary.

2.3 Chute Adjustment
The snow blower features a 180-degree adjustable chute, allowing you to direct the snow discharge precisely. Use the manual chute rotation handle to change the direction of the snow throw.

3. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your PowerSmart snow blower. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.
3.1 General Care
- After each use, clear any remaining snow or debris from the auger housing and chute.
- Inspect the auger paddles and shave plate for wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
- Check all fasteners for tightness. Vibrations during operation can loosen screws.
3.2 Component Inspection and Replacement

Figure 5: An exploded view diagram illustrating various replaceable parts of the PowerSmart PS21 snow blower, including the key switch, spark plug, auger belt, auger cable, shave plate, chute cleaner tool, paddle, and engine oil.
- Spark Plug: Inspect and clean or replace the spark plug periodically to ensure reliable starting.
- Auger Belt: Check the auger belt for wear, cracks, or stretching. Replace if signs of damage are present.
- Paddles and Shave Plate: These rubber components are subject to wear. Replace them when they show significant signs of deterioration to maintain effective snow clearing.
- Chute Cleaner Tool: Use the provided chute cleaner tool to remove clogs from the discharge chute. Never use your hands.
- Engine Oil: Change the engine oil after the first 5 hours of use, then annually or every 50 hours of operation, whichever comes first.
4. Troubleshooting
This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter with your snow blower.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine does not start | No fuel, old fuel, spark plug issue, choke not set correctly, safety key not inserted. | Check fuel level, use fresh fuel, inspect/replace spark plug, ensure choke is ON for cold start, insert safety key. |
| Poor snow clearing performance | Worn auger paddles or shave plate, clogged chute, incorrect operating speed. | Inspect and replace worn paddles/shave plate, clear chute with tool, reduce forward speed in heavy snow. |
| Excessive vibration | Loose fasteners, damaged auger. | Check and tighten all bolts and screws. Inspect auger for damage. |
| Engine runs rough | Stale fuel, dirty air filter, spark plug issue. | Drain old fuel and refill with fresh, clean air filter, inspect/replace spark plug. |
