1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Farway T50 Digital Laser Distance Meter. This device is designed for precise and rapid distance, area, and volume measurements, offering various functions for both professional and DIY applications. Please read this manual carefully before using the device to ensure safe and correct operation.

2. Safety Information

This device emits a Class II laser. Observe the following safety precautions:

  • Do not stare directly into the laser beam.
  • Do not aim the laser beam at people or animals.
  • Avoid direct eye exposure to the laser beam.
  • Do not disassemble or modify the device. Repairs should only be performed by authorized service personnel.
  • Keep the device out of reach of children.
  • Use the device only for its intended purpose as described in this manual.

Laser Class II Product: Output < 1mW at 635nm.

3. Product Overview

The Farway T50 is a compact and robust laser distance meter featuring a backlit LCD and multiple measurement functions.

3.1 Device Components

  • Laser Emission Aperture: Where the laser beam exits.
  • Laser Receiving Lens: Detects the reflected laser beam.
  • Display Screen: Backlit LCD for showing measurements and settings.
  • Keypad: Buttons for various functions and operations.
  • Bubble Level: For horizontal alignment.
  • Battery Compartment: Located at the rear for AAA batteries.
  • Wrist Strap Eyelet: For attaching the included wrist strap.

3.2 Display Screen

The backlit LCD provides clear visibility in various lighting conditions. It displays measurement results, unit indicators, battery status, measurement mode icons, and historical data.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The Farway T50 requires two AAA batteries (included). To install:

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Insert the two AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

The device will automatically turn off after 180 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off

  • Power On: Press the DIST button once to turn on the device and activate the laser.
  • Power Off: Press and hold the CLEAR/OFF button for 2 seconds to turn off the device.

5.2 Unit Switching

To switch between measurement units (meters, inches, feet):

  • Press and hold the UNITS button for 2 seconds. The unit will cycle through M (meters), In (inches), and Ft (feet).

5.3 Measurement Reference Point

The device can measure from the front or rear edge. To switch the reference point:

  • Press the UNITS button briefly. An icon on the display will indicate the current reference point (front or rear).

5.4 Basic Distance Measurement

  1. Turn on the device by pressing DIST.
  2. Aim the laser at the target point.
  3. Press DIST again to take a measurement. The result will be displayed on the screen.

5.5 Continuous Measurement (Tracking)

This mode allows for dynamic measurement, displaying the maximum and minimum distances as you move the device.

  1. Press and hold the DIST button for 2 seconds. The device will enter continuous measurement mode.
  2. Move the device slowly. The display will show the current distance, along with the maximum and minimum distances recorded during the session.
  3. Press DIST again to stop continuous measurement.

5.6 Multiple Measurement Modes

The Farway T50 supports various measurement functions, including single distance, continuous, area, volume, and Pythagorean modes.

To select a measurement mode, press the FUNC button repeatedly until the desired mode icon appears on the display.

5.6.1 Area Measurement

  1. Select the Area measurement mode.
  2. Measure the length by pressing DIST.
  3. Measure the width by pressing DIST. The device will automatically calculate and display the area.

5.6.2 Volume Measurement

  1. Select the Volume measurement mode.
  2. Measure the length, width, and height sequentially by pressing DIST after each measurement. The device will automatically calculate and display the volume.

5.6.3 Pythagorean Measurement (Indirect Measurement)

The device offers 2-point and 3-point Pythagorean modes for indirect height or distance measurements.

  1. Select the desired Pythagorean mode. The display will show which segments need to be measured.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to measure the required distances (e.g., hypotenuse, base).
  3. The device will calculate and display the unknown side.

5.7 Addition and Subtraction

To add or subtract measurements:

  1. Take the first measurement.
  2. Press the +/- button. A '+' or '-' symbol will appear.
  3. Take the second measurement. The result of the addition or subtraction will be displayed.

5.8 Data Storage and Recall

The device can store up to 50 groups of measurement data.

  • Measurements are automatically saved.
  • To recall stored data, press the MEM button. Use the arrow buttons to navigate through the stored measurements.
  • To clear the current display, press the CLEAR/OFF button once.

5.9 Mute Function

To turn the measurement beep sound on or off:

  • Press the MUTE button (often integrated with another function button, refer to device markings).

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the device. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Clean the laser lens carefully with a soft cloth, similar to cleaning camera lenses.
  • Storage: Store the device in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Dispose of used batteries responsibly.
  • Water and Dust Resistance: The device has an IP54 rating, meaning it is protected against dust ingress and splashing water from any direction. However, it is not fully waterproof and should not be submerged.
