4. Setup and Installation

The multi-pack detectors are pre-connected for immediate use. For customized networks or adding new devices, follow the instructions below. Ensure all alarms are activated by attaching them to their mounting bases.

4.1. Initial Activation and Interconnection

  1. Remove the smoke alarm from its packaging.
  2. Attach the smoke alarm to its mounting base by twisting it clockwise until it clicks into place. This action activates the sealed 10-year lithium battery.
  3. For multi-packs, the units are typically pre-interconnected. To verify, perform a test (see Section 5. Operating). If one alarm sounds, all others should follow.
  4. To add new devices or create a new network, refer to the detailed pairing instructions in the included user manual.

4.2. Mounting Location

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including basements and attics. For optimal protection, install alarms inside each bedroom and outside every sleeping area. Mount on the ceiling or high on a wall, away from corners and obstructions.

4.3. Physical Installation

  1. Choose a suitable mounting location.
  2. Use the provided screws and anchor plugs to securely attach the mounting base to the ceiling or wall.
  3. Twist the smoke alarm onto the installed mounting base until it is firmly in place.

5. Operating Your Smoke Detector

The SD19-W operates continuously once activated. The red LED indicator will flash periodically to confirm normal operation.

5.1. Testing the Alarm

It is crucial to test your smoke alarm weekly to ensure proper functioning. The SD19-W features a convenient Test/Silence button.

  1. Press and hold the Test/Silence button located on the front of the alarm for a few seconds.
  2. The alarm will emit a series of loud beeps, and the red LED will flash rapidly. If interconnected, all other alarms will also sound.
  3. Release the button. The alarm should stop sounding.
  4. If the alarm does not sound during the test, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

Note: Do not test the smoke alarm using an open flame. This may damage the alarm or ignite nearby flammable materials, potentially causing a building fire. Use a smoke detector tester spray if you wish to test with simulated smoke.

5.2. Silencing the Alarm

In case of a non-emergency alarm (e.g., cooking fumes), you can temporarily silence the alarm:

  • Press the Test/Silence button once. This will temporarily silence the alarm for approximately 9 minutes.
  • If the smoke concentration is still high after the silence period, the alarm will reactivate.
  • Ensure the cause of the alarm is identified and resolved before silencing.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliability of your smoke detector.

6.1. Cleaning Your Alarm

Clean your smoke alarm at least once a month to remove dust and debris that could interfere with its operation.

  • Gently vacuum the alarm's cover and vents using a soft brush attachment.
  • Do not use water, cleaners, or solvents, as they may damage the unit.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Alarm does not sound during test.Battery not activated or unit is faulty.Ensure the alarm is twisted firmly onto its mounting base to activate. If still no sound, the unit may be faulty and needs replacement.
Frequent false alarms.Dust/debris in sensor, cooking fumes, high humidity, or insects.Clean the alarm regularly (monthly). Relocate the alarm away from cooking areas or high humidity. The insect-proof design helps, but cleaning is still necessary.
Alarm chirps periodically.Low battery warning. The sealed battery is nearing the end of its 10-year life. Replace the entire smoke alarm unit.
Only one alarm sounds in an interconnected system.Interconnection issue or units not properly paired.Ensure all units are within range and properly paired. Refer to the user manual for detailed pairing instructions. Perform a system test to confirm all alarms respond.
