4. Installation

The Kwikset 914 SmartCode deadbolt is designed for easy installation with a screwdriver. It fits standard doors between 1-3/8 inches and 1-3/4 inches thick.

  1. Prepare the Door: Ensure your door is properly prepped with a 2-1/8 inch cross bore and a 1 inch edge bore. Adjust the latch backset if necessary (2-3/8 inches or 2-3/4 inches).
  2. Install the Latch: Insert the latch into the door edge and secure it with screws. Ensure the latch bolt faces the door frame.
  3. Install the Exterior Assembly: Feed the cable through the cross bore and position the exterior keypad assembly flush against the door.
  4. Install the Interior Mounting Plate: Secure the interior mounting plate to the exterior assembly using the provided screws.
  5. Connect the Cable and Install Interior Assembly: Connect the cable from the exterior assembly to the interior assembly. Mount the interior assembly onto the mounting plate and secure it with screws.
  6. Install Batteries: Insert 4 new AA alkaline batteries into the battery pack and slide it into the interior assembly.

5. Setup

5.1 Programming User Codes

The lock supports up to 30 programmable unique user codes for keyless entry.

  1. Add a User Code: Press the Program button on the interior assembly once. Enter a new 4-8 digit user code on the keypad. Press the Lock button. If successful, the keypad will flash green and beep once.
  2. Delete a User Code: Press the Program button twice. Enter the user code you wish to delete. Press the Lock button. If successful, the keypad will flash green and beep once.
  3. Delete All User Codes: Press the Program button three times. Press the Lock button. All user codes will be deleted.

5.2 ZigBee 3.0 Pairing

To integrate your SmartCode deadbolt with a compatible smart home system (e.g., SmartThings, Wink), follow these steps:

  1. Initiate the device discovery mode on your ZigBee hub or panel.
  2. On the lock's interior assembly, press the 'A' button (located near the battery pack) once.
  3. The lock's status LED will flash green during the pairing process. Once successfully paired, the LED will turn solid green and then off.
  4. Refer to your smart home system's instructions for further configuration and remote access features.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Locking the Door

  • From the Exterior: Press the Lock button on the keypad. The deadbolt will extend.
  • From the Interior: Rotate the turn-piece to the vertical position.

6.2 Unlocking the Door

  • Using a User Code: Enter a valid 4-8 digit user code on the keypad. The deadbolt will retract.
  • Using a Key: Insert the key into the keyhole and turn it to unlock.
  • From the Interior: Rotate the turn-piece to the horizontal position.

6.3 Auto-Lock Feature

The lock can be configured to automatically re-lock after 30 seconds. This feature is enabled by default. To disable or enable it, refer to the detailed programming instructions in the full installation guide or your smart home system's settings if connected via ZigBee.

6.4 SmartKey Security

The SmartKey Security feature allows you to re-key your lock yourself in seconds, matching it to an existing Kwikset key. This is useful for situations such as moving to a new home, losing a key, or having multiple Kwikset locks that you want to operate with a single key.

To re-key your lock:

  1. Insert your functioning key and turn it 90 degrees clockwise.
  2. Insert the SmartKey tool fully and firmly into the SmartKey hole. Remove the SmartKey tool.
  3. Remove your original key.
  4. Insert your new key fully and slowly turn it 180 degrees counter-clockwise.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Battery Replacement

The Kwikset 914 SmartCode deadbolt operates on 4 AA alkaline batteries. Battery life is approximately 12 months or longer, depending on usage. When batteries are low, the lock will provide a low battery warning (e.g., a series of beeps or a flashing red LED after locking/unlocking).

  2. Remove the old batteries.
  3. Insert 4 new AA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
