3. Setup
To begin a game of Betrayal at The House on The Hill, players first select their characters and corresponding character boards. The modular room tiles are shuffled, and the starting tiles (Entrance Hall, Foyer, Grand Staircase) are placed. Event, Item, and Omen cards are shuffled and placed in designated areas. Players then place their chosen character figures on the starting tile. The game's unique dice, featuring 0, 1, and 2 pips, are also prepared for use.

4. Gameplay Overview (Operating)
Gameplay is divided into two distinct phases: the Exploration Phase and the Haunt Phase. During the Exploration Phase, players move their characters through the house, revealing new room tiles, encountering events, discovering items, and finding omens. Each new room or card draw can trigger various effects, influencing character stats or revealing more of the house's secrets. The game progresses cooperatively until a specific condition is met, triggering the Haunt Phase.
Once the Haunt is triggered, one player is revealed as the traitor, and the game's objective changes dramatically. The remaining players (survivors) must work together to defeat the traitor or escape the house, while the traitor works to achieve their own sinister goals. The specific objectives for both sides are detailed in the 'Traitor's Tome' and 'Secrets of Survival' books, which are only read once the Haunt begins.
5. Game Mechanics
Character Stats
Each character has four primary stats: Speed, Might, Sanity, and Knowledge. These stats are tracked on the double-sided character boards using clips. Events, items, and omens can modify these stats, affecting a character's abilities and their chances of success in various challenges.

Dice Rolls
The game uses custom dice with faces showing 0, 1, or 2 pips. These dice are rolled to resolve challenges, such as overcoming obstacles, attacking monsters, or resisting mental effects. The number of dice rolled is determined by the relevant character stat or game effect.
Cards and Tokens
Event cards introduce unexpected occurrences, Item cards provide useful tools or abilities, and Omen cards foreshadow the impending Haunt. Tokens represent various game elements, including monsters, obstacles, and special effects, adding depth and variety to each game session.
6. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity of your game, store all components in their designated slots within the game box. Keep the game in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Handle cards and tokens carefully to prevent bending or tearing. If any components become dirty, gently wipe them with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or liquids.
7. Troubleshooting
Rule Clarifications
If a rule is unclear during gameplay, refer to the main rulebook first. For specific Haunt-related questions, consult the 'Traitor's Tome' or 'Secrets of Survival' books, ensuring only the relevant sections are read by the appropriate players. If a situation is not explicitly covered, players should agree on a house rule for that session to maintain game flow.
