Battery Installation
The GPSMAP 79s requires two AA batteries (not included). For optimal performance and battery life, use high-quality alkaline or NiMH rechargeable batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are not recommended due to potential voltage inconsistencies that could damage the device.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
- Rotate the D-ring counter-clockwise and lift the cover to open.
- Insert two AA batteries, observing the polarity markings (+ and -) inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery cover and rotate the D-ring clockwise to secure it. Ensure the cover is properly sealed to maintain water resistance.

Powering On and Initial Setup
- Press and hold the POWER button until the screen turns on.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to select your language, time zone, and other initial settings.
- Allow the device to acquire satellite signals. This may take a few minutes, especially during the first use or after being off for an extended period. Ensure you are in an open area with a clear view of the sky.
Loading Maps (Optional)
The device comes with a worldwide basemap. For more detailed marine charts or regional maps, you may need to purchase and load them onto the device. Operating Instructions
Basic Navigation
The GPSMAP 79s uses a button-based interface for all operations. Familiarize yourself with the buttons:
- POWER: Turns the device on/off, adjusts backlight.
- PAGE: Cycles through main pages (Map, Compass, Trip Computer, etc.).
- MENU: Opens the menu for the current page; press twice for the main menu.
- FIND: Accesses search functions for waypoints, tracks, routes.
- MARK: Marks your current location as a waypoint.
- QUIT: Cancels an action or returns to the previous page.
- ENTER: Confirms selections.
- Arrow Keys: Navigate menus, pan maps, adjust zoom.

Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks
- Waypoints: Press MARK to save your current location. You can edit waypoint names and symbols. The device can store up to 10,000 waypoints.
- Routes: Create routes by combining multiple waypoints. The device supports up to 250 routes.
- Tracks: The device automatically records your path as a track. You can save tracks and navigate back along them. It can store up to 300 fit activities (tracks).
Satellite Constellations
The GPSMAP 79s supports multiple global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) including GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, and SBAS. This multi-constellation support enhances tracking reliability and accuracy worldwide, especially in challenging environments.
Built-in Sensors
- 3-Axis Tilt-Compensated Electronic Compass: Provides accurate heading information even when the device is not held level or when standing still.
- Barometric Altimeter: Tracks changes in pressure to provide precise altitude readings and can be used to plot barometric pressure over time, aiding in weather trend analysis.

Maintenance
Cleaning the Device
