2. Safety Information

WARNING: Always exercise extreme caution when using any cutting tool. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury.

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
  • Keep hands and body clear of the blade during operation.
  • Ensure the saw is fully locked in the open position before use and fully locked in the closed position for storage.
  • Do not use the saw if the blade is dull, bent, or damaged. Replace damaged blades immediately.
  • Keep children and bystanders at a safe distance from the work area.
  • Use the saw only for its intended purpose: cutting wood.
  • Never force the saw. Let the blade's sharpness and design do the work.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially overhead branches or unstable material.
  • Store the saw in its protective case when not in use, out of reach of children.

3. Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the saw from its packaging and storage case. Inspect the saw for any signs of damage.
  2. Unfolding the Blade:

Locate the locking mechanism near the pivot point of the blade and handle. Typically, this involves pressing a button or lever. While holding the handle firmly, carefully unfold the blade until it clicks securely into the fully open position.

Verify that the blade is firmly locked and does not wobble before proceeding.

  3. Pre-Operation Check: Before each use, ensure the blade is clean, sharp, and free from damage. Check that the handle is secure and the locking mechanism functions correctly.

4. Operating Instructions

The Silky Bigboy 2000 is designed for efficient cutting on the pull stroke. This means the saw cuts as you pull it towards you, not when you push it away.

  1. Grip: Hold the handle firmly with both hands if possible, or one hand with a secure grip, ensuring your fingers are clear of the blade path. The arbor composite handle provides enhanced grip, even in wet conditions.
  2. Starting the Cut: Place the blade on the material to be cut. Apply light pressure on the pull stroke to initiate the cut. Do not push hard on the forward stroke, as this can bend the blade or damage the teeth.
  3. Cutting Technique: Use long, steady pull strokes. Allow the saw's sharp teeth and design to do the work. The Mirai-Me teeth are designed for smooth cutting in various directions (rip, cross, slant).
  4. Clearing Sawdust: The design of the blade helps clear sawdust from the kerf (cut path), reducing binding. If the saw binds, do not force it. Slightly adjust the angle or clear debris.
  5. Finishing the Cut: As you approach the end of the cut, support the material to prevent it from breaking prematurely and pinching the blade.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the blade thoroughly to remove sap, resin, and sawdust. Use a damp cloth and mild soap if necessary. Dry the blade completely to prevent rust.
  • Blade Protection: The black-plated blade offers improved durability and corrosion resistance. However, regular cleaning and drying are still recommended.
  • Sharpening: Silky saw blades feature impulse-hardened teeth, which are extremely durable and retain their sharpness for a long time. These teeth cannot be re-sharpened with conventional files. When the blade eventually dulls, it is recommended to replace the blade. Replacement blades are available from authorized Silky dealers.
  • Storage: Always fold the blade into the handle and secure the locking mechanism before storing. Keep the saw in its provided storage case to protect the blade and prevent accidental injury. Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
