3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully unpack all components and compare them against the packing list. Inspect for any shipping damage. Report any discrepancies or damage to your supplier immediately.

3.2 Mounting the Lathe

The lathe should be securely mounted on a sturdy workbench or stand capable of supporting its weight (approximately 167 lbs / 76 kg) and resisting vibration during operation. Ensure the mounting surface is level to maintain accuracy.

3.3 Electrical Connection

Connect the lathe to a suitable power supply as specified in the electrical requirements section of the full manual. Ensure proper grounding to prevent electrical hazards.

3.4 Initial Lubrication and Cleaning

Before first use, thoroughly clean all protective coatings and apply a thin layer of machine oil to all moving parts, including the lead screw, cross slide, and bedways. Refer to the maintenance section for recommended lubricants.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Safety Precautions

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and suitable clothing.
  • Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped in the chuck or between centers before starting the machine.
  • Never leave the machine unattended while it is running.
  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency stop button location and function.

4.2 Spindle Speed Control

The VEVOR Metal Lathe features an infinitely variable speed control. Use the control knob to adjust the spindle RPM, which is displayed on the LED screen. Always select an appropriate speed for the material and cutting operation.

4.3 Chuck Operation

The 3-jaw chuck is used to hold cylindrical workpieces. To open or close the jaws, use the chuck key provided. Ensure the workpiece is centered and securely tightened before operation. For precise centering, especially with non-cylindrical parts, a 4-jaw chuck (sold separately) may be required.

4.4 Tool Post and Cutting Operations

The 4-way tool post allows for quick changes of cutting tools. Adjust the tool height to be on the center line of the workpiece. The compound rest can be swiveled to achieve various cutting angles for facing, turning, and threading operations.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Regularly clean the lathe to remove metal chips, dust, and debris. Use a brush or shop vacuum. Avoid using compressed air as it can force chips into moving parts.

5.2 Lubrication

Apply machine oil to the bedways, lead screw, cross slide, and other sliding surfaces before and after each use. Check the gearbox oil level periodically and refill as needed according to the full manual's specifications.

5.3 Adjustments and Alignment

Periodically check and adjust the alignment of the tailstock and headstock to ensure accuracy. Tighten any loose fasteners. Refer to the full manual for detailed adjustment procedures.

6. Troubleshooting
