Safety Information
Always observe proper electrical safety procedures when working with this control board. Ensure power is disconnected before making any wiring changes. Incorrect wiring or power supply can damage the board and connected components. This device is intended for use by individuals familiar with electronics and CNC systems.
Setup
Refer to the diagram below for component identification and connection points. Ensure all connections are secure before applying power.

Figure 1: Top view of the Doesbot GRBL 1.1 A4988 4-Axis Stepper Motor Control Board with key components and connection points labeled, including X, Y1, Y2, Z, A axes, power input, spindle, fan, laser, USB, and offline controller ports.
1. Power Supply Connection:
- Connect a 12V to 24V DC power supply to the main power input terminals. Observe correct polarity (+ and -).
- Caution: Ensure the power supply voltage is within the specified range. Using an incorrect voltage can damage the board.
2. Stepper Motor Driver Installation and Connection:
- The board uses A4988 stepper motor drivers (typically red modules as shown in Figure 1).
- Before powering the board, always set the voltage reference (Vref) on each A4988 driver to match your stepper motors' current requirements. Refer to the A4988 datasheet for proper Vref adjustment.
- Insert the A4988 drivers into their respective sockets (X, Y1, Y2, Z, A). Ensure correct orientation to prevent damage.
- Connect your stepper motors to the corresponding axis headers (X, Y1, Y2, Z, A). Ensure the motor wires are connected correctly to the driver outputs.
- Critical Warning: Always connect stepper motors to the drivers before applying power to the control board. Disconnecting or connecting motors while the board is powered can permanently damage the A4988 drivers.
3. Spindle Connection:
- For 48V 500W DC spindles, connect to the designated 48V Spindle output terminals.
- For 300W spindles or 775 motors, connect to the appropriate spindle output.
- The board supports 1-10V VFD output for spindle speed control. Connect your VFD to the "1-10V VFD Output" pins.
4. Laser Module Connection:
- Connect 2-pin, 3-pin, or 4-pin laser modules to their respective ports.
- Ensure correct polarity and pin assignments for your specific laser module. Refer to your laser module's documentation.
- The board supports TTL/PWM for laser power adjustment.
5. Limit Switch Connection:
- Connect X, Y, and Z axis limit switches to the "XYZ Limit" interface.
- Properly configured limit switches are essential for machine safety and homing functions.
6. Fan and Other Connections:
- Connect cooling fans to the designated fan headers (e.g., 24V FAN, 12V FAN).
- Connect an offline controller to the "Offline controller" port if desired.
- Connect the board to your computer using the provided USB data cable.
Operating Instructions
1. Software Setup:
- The board comes with GRBL 1.1 firmware pre-flashed. No firmware flashing is required.
- Install a compatible GRBL control software on your computer (e.g., Candle, UGS, LaserGRBL).
- Connect the control board to your computer via USB. The software should detect the board.
2. GRBL Configuration:
- Configure GRBL settings within your control software to match your machine's dimensions, motor steps per millimeter, and other parameters.
- For 4-axis operation, ensure the A-axis settings ($103, $113, $123, and $133) are correctly configured to match your A-axis motor and desired movement. These settings should be adjusted as needed, similar to other axes.
3. Laser Operation:
- Use the TTL/PWM output for software-controlled laser power adjustment.
- Always wear appropriate eye protection when operating a laser engraver.
4. Spindle Operation:
- Control spindle speed through the GRBL software commands or the 1-10V VFD output.
5. Offline Operation:
- If an offline controller is connected, load G-code files onto the controller and operate the machine without a direct computer connection.
Maintenance
- Keep the control board clean and free from dust and debris. Use compressed air for cleaning if necessary.
- Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent overheating, especially during extended operation.
- Regularly check all wiring connections for tightness and signs of wear.
- Inspect stepper motor drivers for any visible damage or signs of overheating.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues and Solutions:
- Issue: Stepper motors not moving or moving erratically.
- Solution: Check power supply voltage and current. Verify stepper motor wiring. Ensure A4988 driver Vref is correctly set. Confirm GRBL settings ($100, $101, $102, etc.) for steps per millimeter are accurate. Ensure motors were connected before power was applied.
- Issue: Board not recognized by computer via USB.
- Solution: Try a different USB cable or port. Ensure necessary USB drivers are installed on your computer. Restart both the computer and the control board.
- Issue: Laser module not firing or power control issues.
- Solution: Verify laser module wiring (2-pin, 3-pin, or 4-pin) and polarity. Check GRBL settings related to laser mode and PWM frequency. Ensure the laser module itself is functional. If using a 3-pin laser port, confirm its functionality with a known working laser.
- Issue: VFD output is constant voltage instead of variable 0-10V.
- Solution: Double-check connections to the VFD output pins. Ensure GRBL settings for spindle control (e.g., $30, $31, $32) are correctly configured for PWM output and spindle speed range.
- Issue: Board fails or smokes upon power-up.
- Solution: Immediately disconnect power. This usually indicates incorrect power supply voltage, reverse polarity, or a short circuit. Review all wiring carefully before attempting to re-power. Ensure stepper motors were connected before power was applied.
