Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, installation, and maintenance of your HFT Badland ZXR 2500 Lb. ATV Utility Winch. This electric ATV winch is designed to assist in ATV recovery, traversing rough terrain, or loading a boat. It features a single-stage planetary gear system for fast line speed, aircraft grade wire rope, and a permanent magnet motor that draws less current, making it ideal for ATV use. Please read this manual thoroughly before use and retain it for future reference.
Safety Information
Always prioritize safety when operating the winch. Failure to follow safety guidelines can result in serious injury or property damage.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and eye protection.
- Ensure the winch is securely mounted to a stable surface capable of handling the load.
- Never exceed the rated pulling capacity of the winch.
- Keep hands and clothing clear of the wire rope, fairlead, and drum during operation.
- Inspect the wire rope for frays, kinks, or damage before each use. Replace if damaged.
- Do not operate the winch if the wire rope is not properly spooled on the drum.
- Avoid continuous operation under heavy load to prevent motor overheating. Allow for cool-down periods.
- Ensure the vehicle's engine is running during winching to maintain battery charge.
- Use a tree saver strap or similar anchor point to protect trees and other objects.
- Always use the automatic load-holding brake for maximum safety.

Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your winch. Refer to the detailed diagrams in the included owner's manual for specific mounting points for your ATV model.
- Mounting the Winch: Securely attach the winch to the designated mounting plate on your ATV using the provided hardware. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the manufacturer's specifications.
- Mounting the Control Box: Find a suitable, protected location for the control box/solenoid, typically near the battery or under the ATV's bodywork. Secure it firmly to prevent movement during operation.
- Wiring: Connect the wiring harness from the winch and control box to your ATV's 12V battery system. Ensure all connections are clean, tight, and properly insulated. Pay close attention to positive and negative terminals to avoid short circuits.
- Install Fairlead: Attach the roller fairlead to the winch mounting plate, ensuring the wire rope can pass smoothly through it.

Operating Instructions
The ZXR 2500 Lb. winch can be operated using either the wired or wireless remote control.
Free Spooling
To quickly unspool the wire rope without using motor power, locate the clutch lever on the side of the winch drum. Rotate the lever to the "Free Spool" position. This disengages the drum, allowing you to manually pull out the wire rope. Once the desired length is achieved, rotate the clutch lever back to the "Engaged" position before operating the winch with the remote.
Winching In/Out with Remote Control
Connect the wired remote control to the designated port on the winch or control box. For the wireless remote, ensure it has fresh batteries and is paired according to the owner's manual. Use the "IN" button to retract the wire rope and the "OUT" button to extend it. Always maintain a safe distance from the wire rope and load during operation.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable performance of your winch.
- Wire Rope Inspection: Regularly inspect the 5/32 in. x 50 ft. aircraft grade wire rope for any signs of wear, fraying, kinks, or corrosion. Replace the wire rope immediately if any damage is found.
- Cleanliness: Keep the winch, motor, and electrical connections clean and free of dirt, mud, and debris. Use a damp cloth for cleaning; avoid high-pressure washing directly on electrical components.
- Electrical Connections: Periodically check all electrical connections for tightness and corrosion. Clean and apply dielectric grease if necessary.
- Lubrication: Refer to the owner's manual for specific lubrication requirements for the gear system and other moving parts.
- Storage: When not in use, store the winch in a dry, protected environment to prevent rust and corrosion.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your winch, try these common troubleshooting steps:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Winch does not operate. | No power to the winch; loose electrical connections; faulty remote; tripped circuit breaker/fuse. | Check battery connections; ensure remote batteries are good; inspect and reset circuit breaker/fuse. |
| Winch operates slowly or with reduced power. | Low battery voltage; excessive load; corroded electrical connections. | Ensure ATV engine is running; reduce load; clean battery terminals and connections. |
| Wire rope does not spool evenly. | Improper tension during spooling; damaged fairlead. | Respool the wire rope under light tension; inspect fairlead rollers for smooth operation. |
