Welcome to the instruction manual for The A500 Mini, a compact reimagining of the classic Amiga home computer. Originally released in 1987, the Amiga 500 featured a 16/32-bit CPU, 512KB of RAM, and custom chips for superior sound and video. The A500 Mini provides perfect emulation of the original A500 (OCS), Enhanced Chip Set (ECS) of future revisions, and the Advanced Graphics Architecture (AGA) of the A1200.

Product Overview

The A500 Mini is designed to bring back the 1980s 16-bit personal computing experience. It comes pre-loaded with 25 classic Amiga games and supports side-loading of additional games via a USB stick with WHDLoad support. Game save and resume functions are available.

Setup

1. Unboxing and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Verify that the following items are included:

  • The A500 Mini Console
  • Original-style 2-button USB Mouse
  • 8-button USB Gamepad
  • USB-C Power Cable (Power brick not included)
  • HDMI Cable
  • Quick Guide Manual

2. Connecting the Console

  1. Connect the HDMI cable from the A500 Mini to an available HDMI input on your television or monitor.
  2. Connect the USB-C power cable to the A500 Mini and plug the other end into a compatible USB power adapter (5V/2A recommended, not supplied).
  3. Connect the USB mouse and USB gamepad to the available USB ports on the rear of the console.
  4. (Optional) Connect a standard USB PC keyboard to an available USB port for additional text input functionality.

3. Powering On

Locate the power switch on the rear of the A500 Mini and slide it to the 'ON' position. The console will boot up and display the main game carousel on your screen.

Operating

1. Navigating the Game Carousel

Use the included gamepad or mouse to navigate through the pre-installed 25 classic Amiga games. Select a game by pressing the 'A' button on the gamepad or clicking with the left mouse button.

2. Playing Games

Once a game is selected, it will load automatically. Refer to the in-game instructions or the Quick Guide for specific controls for each title.

3. Saving and Resuming Games

The A500 Mini supports save and resume functions. During gameplay, you can typically access the system menu to save your progress. Consult the Quick Guide for detailed instructions on saving and loading game states.

4. Side-loading Games via USB

The A500 Mini supports WHDLoad for side-loading additional Amiga games from a USB memory stick (not supplied). Ensure your USB stick is formatted to FAT32. Games must be legally obtained/purchased from their legal owners.

Insert the USB memory stick into one of the available USB ports on the console. The system should detect the games automatically and add them to the game carousel or a dedicated USB games section.

5. Display Options

The console outputs 50/60Hz in 720p HD via HDMI. Multiple scaling options and a CRT filter are available through the system settings to customize your visual experience.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the A500 Mini console, mouse, and gamepad. Avoid using liquid cleaners or abrasive materials.

2. Firmware Updates

Periodically check the official Retro Games website for firmware updates. Firmware updates can be applied via a USB stick and may improve performance, add features, or fix bugs. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware update file carefully.

3. Storage

When not in use, store the A500 Mini and its accessories in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

No Display on Screen

  • Ensure the HDMI cable is securely connected to both the A500 Mini and your display.
  • Verify that your television or monitor is set to the correct HDMI input source.
  • Check that the power cable is properly connected and the console is powered on.

Console Not Powering On

  • Confirm the USB-C power cable is fully inserted into the console and the power adapter.
