Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, setup, and maintenance of your Generac GP6500 portable generator. The GP6500 is designed to provide reliable power with PowerRush Advanced Technology, offering increased starting capacity for various applications.
Safety Information
Always operate the generator outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from windows and doors, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never operate the generator indoors, including garages or sheds.
- COSense Technology: This generator is equipped with COSense Technology, which automatically shuts down the engine if hazardous carbon monoxide levels are detected.
- Low-Oil Level Shutdown: The engine will automatically shut down if the oil level drops below a safe operating threshold, protecting the engine from damage.
- Circuit Breakers: Integrated AC circuit breakers protect the generator from overload. Reset them by pressing the button after resolving the overload condition.
Setup
1. Unpacking and Assembly
Carefully remove the generator and all components from the packaging. Assembly typically involves attaching the wheels and the easy fold-down handle. Refer to the included assembly guide for detailed steps.

2. Adding Engine Oil
The generator is shipped without engine oil. Locate the oil fill cap/dipstick. Using the provided funnel, carefully add the recommended engine oil (typically 10W-30, a quart is often included with the generator) until it reaches the 'Full' mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill.

3. Adding Fuel
Fill the large-capacity steel fuel tank with fresh, unleaded gasoline. Ensure the fuel cap is securely tightened after filling. The built-in fuel gauge allows for easy monitoring of fuel levels.
Operating Instructions
1. Starting the Generator
- Ensure the generator is on a level surface and all electrical loads are disconnected.
- Turn the fuel valve to the 'ON' position.
- Move the choke lever to the 'CHOKE' position (if starting a cold engine).
- For electric start models, press and hold the 'START' button until the engine starts. For manual start, pull the recoil starter handle firmly.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the 'RUN' position.
2. Connecting Electrical Loads
Once the generator is running smoothly, you can connect your electrical devices to the appropriate outlets (120V, 240V). Do not overload the generator. The control panel features multiple outlets with protective covers.

3. Monitoring Operation
The integrated hour meter tracks engine run time, which is crucial for scheduling maintenance intervals. Regularly check the fuel gauge and listen for any unusual engine noises.
4. Shutting Down the Generator
- Disconnect all electrical loads from the generator.
- Allow the engine to run for a few minutes without load to cool down.
- Turn the engine switch to the 'OFF' position.
- Turn the fuel valve to the 'OFF' position.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your generator. Always refer to the complete owner's manual for detailed maintenance schedules and procedures.
- Oil Changes: Change the engine oil at recommended intervals, typically after the first 20 hours of operation, and then every 50-100 hours or annually, whichever comes first. Use the hour meter to track usage.
- Air Filter: Inspect and clean the air filter regularly. Replace if damaged.
- Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug annually or every 100 hours. Replace if necessary.
- Fuel System: Use a fuel stabilizer if storing the generator for extended periods to prevent fuel degradation.
- General Cleaning: Keep the generator clean and free of debris.
Troubleshooting
If your generator experiences issues, consult the following basic troubleshooting steps. For complex problems, contact qualified service personnel.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine will not start | No fuel, low oil, choke not set, battery low (electric start) | Add fuel, add oil, adjust choke, charge battery. |
| No power output | Circuit breaker tripped, overloaded, faulty connection | Reset circuit breaker, reduce load, check connections. |
| Engine shuts down during operation | Low oil, COSense activation, overload | Check oil level, move to well-ventilated area, reduce load. |
