4. Installation

Installation of the Kwikset Breton door handle is designed to be straightforward and can typically be completed with a screwdriver. Detailed directions are provided in the packaging.

4.1. Prepare the Door

Ensure your door is prepared with the correct bore holes. This handle fits standard door thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 1-3/4". The latch backset is adjustable to either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" with a simple twist during installation.

4.2. Install the Latch

5.2. Unlocking the Door (Interior)

From the interior side, rotate the turn button back to its original position to unlock the door. The lever will then operate freely.

5.3. Emergency Unlocking (Exterior)

In case of an emergency or accidental lockout, insert the emergency unlock tool (or a small, pointed object) into the small hole on the exterior lever. Push firmly to disengage the locking mechanism.

6. Maintenance

To maintain the appearance and functionality of your Kwikset Breton door handle, follow these guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Clean the handle regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish and the Microban protection.
  • Lubrication: If the latch mechanism becomes stiff, apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the moving parts. Do not use oil-based lubricants, as they can attract dust and debris.
  • Microban Protection: The integrated Microban antimicrobial technology works continuously to keep the handle surface cleaner. Regular cleaning as described above will help maintain its effectiveness.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Kwikset Breton door handle, consider the following common solutions:

  • Loose Handle: If the lever feels loose, check the screws on both the interior and exterior sides of the handle. Tighten them gently with a screwdriver.
  • Sticking Latch: If the latch bolt is sticking or not retracting smoothly, ensure the strike plate on the door frame is properly aligned. You may need to adjust the strike plate or lubricate the latch mechanism as described in the Maintenance section.
  • Lock Not Engaging: Verify that the turn button on the interior side is fully rotated. If the issue persists, check for any obstructions in the latch mechanism or ensure the handle is correctly installed and aligned.

For persistent issues, refer to the detailed installation guide or contact Kwikset customer support.
