Homelite UT43123 16-Inch 12 Amp Electric Chainsaw User Manual

Model: UT43123

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Homelite UT43123 16-Inch 12 Amp Electric Chainsaw. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the chainsaw to ensure proper use and to prevent injury or damage.

The Homelite UT43123 is a corded electric chainsaw designed for cutting trees and limbs. It features a 12 Amp motor and a 16-inch bar, capable of cutting materials up to 28 inches in diameter. Key features include an automatic bar and chain oiler, a tool-less chain tensioner, a wraparound handle with a comfort grip, and a lockout switch for safety.

Important Safety Instructions

WARNING: Read and understand all instructions before using this electric chainsaw. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious personal injury.

General Safety Rules:

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
  • Ensure the work area is clear of obstructions, children, and bystanders.
  • Do not operate the chainsaw in wet conditions or in the presence of flammable liquids or gases.
  • Inspect the chainsaw for damage before each use. Do not operate if damaged.
  • Keep hands and feet away from the chain when the chainsaw is connected to power.
  • Disconnect the chainsaw from the power source before making any adjustments, cleaning, or performing maintenance.
  • Use only extension cords rated for outdoor use and appropriate for the chainsaw's amperage.
  • Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the OFF position before plugging in the tool.

Kickback Safety:

Kickback can occur when the moving chain at the tip of the guide bar contacts an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. This can cause a rapid, uncontrolled upward and backward motion of the guide bar towards the operator.

  • Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the chainsaw.
  • Do not overreach or cut above shoulder height.
  • Be aware of the guide bar tip position.
  • Do not cut with the tip of the guide bar.

  • Guide Bar: The metal bar that guides the saw chain.
  • Saw Chain: The cutting chain that rotates around the guide bar.
  • Motor Housing: Encloses the 12 Amp electric motor.
  • Wraparound Handle: Provides multiple grip positions for control and comfort.

  • Lockout Switch: Prevents accidental motor activation.
  • Power Cord: Connects the chainsaw to an electrical outlet.

Setup and Assembly

1. Unpacking:

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage. Retain packaging for future storage or transport.

2. Bar and Chain Installation (if not pre-assembled):

  1. Ensure the chainsaw is unplugged.
  2. Remove the side cover by loosening the retention knob.
  3. Place the chain around the sprocket and guide bar, ensuring the cutting edges face forward on the top of the bar.
  4. Align the guide bar studs with the holes in the guide bar.
  5. Replace the side cover and hand-tighten the retention knob.

3. Adjusting Chain Tension:

Proper chain tension is crucial for safe and efficient operation. The chain should be snug against the guide bar but still able to be pulled freely by hand.

  1. Ensure the chainsaw is unplugged.
  2. Loosen the side cover retention knob slightly.
  3. Turn the tool-less chain tensioner knob (typically located on the side cover) clockwise to increase tension or counter-clockwise to decrease tension.
  4. Check tension: The chain should not sag on the underside of the guide bar. When pulled away from the bar, the drive links should remain in the bar groove.
  5. Once tension is correct, firmly tighten the side cover retention knob.

4. Filling the Bar and Chain Oiler:

The Homelite UT43123 features an automatic oiler. It is essential to keep the oil reservoir filled with appropriate bar and chain oil.

  1. Ensure the chainsaw is unplugged and on a level surface.
  2. Locate and remove the oil reservoir cap.
  3. Fill the reservoir with high-quality bar and chain oil. Do not use motor oil or waste oil.
  4. Replace the cap securely.
  5. Periodically check the oil level during operation using the oil level window.

Operating Instructions

1. Connecting to Power:

  • Use a heavy-duty outdoor extension cord (e.g., 12 or 14 gauge) appropriate for the length required.
  • Ensure the extension cord is in good condition, without cuts or fraying.
  • Connect the chainsaw's power cord to the extension cord, and then plug the extension cord into a grounded 120V AC outlet.
  • Secure the connection between the chainsaw cord and extension cord to prevent accidental disconnection during use.

2. Starting the Chainsaw:

  1. Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands.
  2. Depress the lockout switch (usually a small button or lever) with your thumb.
  3. Squeeze the trigger switch to start the motor. The chain will begin to move.
  4. Release the lockout switch once the motor is running.

3. Making a Cut:

  • Always stand with good balance and footing.
  • Allow the chainsaw to reach full speed before contacting the wood.
  • Apply light pressure. Let the saw do the work. Do not force the saw through the cut.
  • Be aware of potential kickback. Avoid cutting with the tip of the guide bar.
  • For felling trees, follow proper notching and felling techniques. Consult professional guidance if unsure.
  • For limbing, work from the bottom up, supporting the limb to prevent pinching.

4. Stopping the Chainsaw:

Release the trigger switch. The chain will stop quickly.

Maintenance

WARNING: Always disconnect the chainsaw from the power source before performing any maintenance or cleaning.

1. Chain Sharpening:

A sharp chain is essential for safe and efficient cutting. A dull chain will cause the saw to work harder, produce sawdust instead of chips, and increase the risk of kickback.

  • Sharpen the chain regularly using a round file of the correct diameter (refer to chain specifications).
  • Maintain consistent filing angles for each cutter.
  • Alternatively, have the chain professionally sharpened or replace it with a new one.

2. Guide Bar Maintenance:

  • Clean the guide bar groove regularly to remove sawdust and debris.
  • Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
  • Check for burrs on the guide bar rails and file them smooth if present.

3. Cleaning:

  • After each use, clean the chainsaw thoroughly.
  • Remove sawdust, wood chips, and oil residue from the motor housing, guide bar, and chain.
  • Use a brush or compressed air. Do not use water to clean electrical components.

4. Storage:

  • Ensure the chainsaw is clean and dry before storing.
  • Empty the bar and chain oil reservoir if storing for an extended period.
  • Apply a light coat of oil to the chain and guide bar to prevent rust.
  • Store the chainsaw in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children.
  • Use the guide bar cover to protect the chain.
