3. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to prepare your ice cream maker for use:

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Mix your desired ice cream, gelato, or sorbet ingredients according to your recipe. Ensure the mixture is well-chilled before pouring into the aluminum canister.
  2. Assemble Canister: Place the dasher/paddle inside the aluminum canister. Pour your chilled ice cream mixture into the canister, ensuring it does not exceed the maximum fill line. Secure the canister lid onto the canister.
  3. Place Canister in Bucket: Carefully lower the assembled aluminum canister into the center of the pine wood bucket.
  4. Add Ice and Rock Salt: Fill the space between the aluminum canister and the wood bucket with layers of ice and rock salt. A common ratio is 6 parts ice to 1 part rock salt. This mixture creates the necessary cold environment for churning.
  5. Attach Motor Unit or Hand Crank:
    • For Electric Operation: Place the electric motor unit securely onto the top of the wood bucket, ensuring the motor shaft engages with the dasher/paddle in the canister. The motor unit should lock into place on the bucket's side brackets.
    • For Manual Operation: Attach the classic die-cast hand crank to the top of the wood bucket, ensuring its shaft engages with the dasher/paddle.
Three step process for ice cream maker setup: Step 1 Mix ingredients, Step 2 Assemble parts, Step 3 Add ice and rock salt to bucket.

4. Operating Instructions

Once the unit is set up, you can begin churning your ice cream:

  1. Start Churning:
    • Electric Motor: Plug the electric motor unit into a standard electrical outlet and press the ON switch. The motor will begin to churn the mixture.
    • Hand Crank: Begin turning the hand crank steadily.
  2. Churning Time: Churning typically takes 35-60 minutes, depending on the recipe and desired consistency. The electric motor will automatically stop when the ice cream reaches a thick, soft-serve consistency. For manual churning, continue until the desired thickness is achieved.
  3. Check Consistency: Periodically check the consistency of the ice cream by briefly stopping the motor (or hand cranking) and removing the lid. The ice cream should be firm but still soft enough to scoop.
  4. Serving: Once the ice cream reaches the desired consistency, unplug the electric motor (or remove the hand crank). Carefully remove the dasher/paddle from the canister. You can serve the ice cream immediately for a soft-serve texture, or transfer it to an airtight container and place it in the freezer for a firmer consistency.

5. Maintenance and Cleaning

Proper cleaning and maintenance will ensure the longevity of your ice cream maker:

  • Disassembly: After use, unplug the motor unit (if applicable) and remove it from the bucket. Remove the aluminum canister from the wood bucket. Discard any remaining ice and rock salt. Remove the dasher/paddle and lid from the canister.
  • Cleaning Canister and Lid: The aluminum canister and its lid are dishwasher safe. For best results, rinse off any residue before placing them in the dishwasher.
  • Cleaning Dasher/Paddle: Hand wash the dasher/paddle with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
  • Cleaning Motor Unit: Wipe the exterior of the electric motor unit with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the motor unit in water or any other liquid.
  • Cleaning Wood Bucket: Wipe the wood bucket with a damp cloth and dry it immediately. Do not soak the wood bucket in water, as this can cause damage or warping.
  • Storage: Ensure all parts are completely dry before storing. Store the ice cream maker in a cool, dry place.
