3. Setup and First Use
3.1 Unpacking
- Remove all packaging materials from the appliance.
- Place the machine on a stable, level surface.
- Remove the water tank and rinse it with fresh water.
3.2 Initial Setup
- Fill the water tank with fresh tap water up to the MAX indication.
- Fill the bean hopper with fresh coffee beans.
- Plug the appliance into a grounded wall socket.
- Press the power button to turn on the machine.
- Follow the on-screen instructions or indicator lights for the initial rinse cycle. This primes the system and ensures optimal performance.
4. Operating the Machine
4.1 Making Coffee
- Place one or two cups under the coffee spouts.
- Select your desired coffee beverage (e.g., Espresso, Coffee) from the control panel.
- Adjust coffee strength and volume if desired using the dedicated buttons/icons.
- Press the start button. The machine will grind the beans and brew your coffee.
4.2 Hot Water Dispensing
- Place a cup under the hot water spout (or steam wand if it doubles as one).
- Select the 'Hot Water' function from the control panel.
- Press the start button to dispense hot water. Press again to stop.
4.3 Frothing Milk (Manual Steam Wand)
Note: The EP1223/00 features a classic milk frother.
- Fill a milk pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) up to one-third full.
- Select the 'Steam' function on the control panel. Wait for the machine to heat up.
- Immerse the steam wand tip just below the surface of the milk.
- Open the steam valve (if applicable, or press the start button for steam).
- Move the pitcher slowly up and down to create foam.
- Once desired foam and temperature are reached, close the steam valve and remove the pitcher.
- Important: Immediately clean the steam wand with a damp cloth after use to prevent milk residue from drying.
4.4 Adjusting Grind Settings
The grind setting can be adjusted using the knob inside the bean hopper. Only adjust the grind setting when the grinder is operating.
- Finer Grind: Turn the knob to a lower number for a stronger coffee and slower flow.
- Coarser Grind: Turn the knob to a higher number for a milder coffee and faster flow.
5. Maintenance
Regular cleaning and maintenance ensure optimal performance and longevity of your espresso machine.
5.1 Daily Cleaning
- Drip Tray and Coffee Grounds Container: Empty and rinse daily.
- Water Tank: Rinse daily and refill with fresh water.
- Brew Group: Remove and rinse under tap water. Allow to air dry before reinserting. This should be done weekly or as indicated by the machine.
- Steam Wand: Clean immediately after each use with a damp cloth. Perform a short steam burst to clear any internal residue.
5.2 Descaling
The machine will indicate when descaling is required. Use only Philips descaling solution. Follow the instructions provided with the descaling solution and the machine's display prompts.
- Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container.
- Remove the AquaClean filter (if installed).
- Pour the entire bottle of Philips descaling solution into the water tank, then fill the tank with fresh water up to the descaling indication.
- Place a large container under the coffee spout and steam wand.
- Start the descaling cycle as prompted by the machine.
- After the descaling cycle, rinse the water tank and perform a rinse cycle with fresh water.
