For Technics SL D2, SL D202, SL D205 Turntables

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your MAG Turntable Titanium Stylus & Cartridge. This product is designed to deliver excellent sound quality and strong tracking ability for compatible Technics turntables, specifically models SL D2, SL D202, and SL D205. Please read this manual thoroughly before use to ensure proper setup and optimal performance.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent damage to the product or injury to yourself.

  • Handle the stylus and cartridge with care. The stylus tip is delicate and can be damaged by improper handling.
  • Keep the product out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble the cartridge or headshell. This may void the warranty and cause damage.
  • Ensure your turntable is powered off and unplugged before installing or removing the cartridge and headshell.
  • Avoid touching the stylus tip with your fingers. Use a stylus brush for cleaning.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all items are present in your package:

  • 1 x Titanium Plated Headshell
  • 1 x Moving Magnetic Cartridge
  • 1 x Stereo Spherical Diamond Stylus (pre-installed)
  • Pre-attached wiring for easy connection

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install your new headshell, cartridge, and stylus onto your Technics turntable.

4.1 Preparing Your Turntable

  1. Ensure your turntable is turned off and unplugged from the power outlet.
  2. If an old headshell and cartridge are installed, carefully remove them by unscrewing the locking collar at the tonearm's end.
  3. Place the old unit in a safe place.

4.2 Installing the New Headshell and Cartridge

Your MAG Turntable headshell comes with the cartridge and stylus pre-installed and wired, ready for direct attachment.

  1. Gently hold the new headshell by its body, avoiding contact with the stylus.
  2. Align the headshell connector with the tonearm socket. The pins should slide in smoothly.
  3. Twist the locking collar on the tonearm clockwise until the headshell is securely fastened. Do not overtighten.

4.3 Balancing the Tonearm and Setting Tracking Force

Proper tonearm balance and tracking force are crucial for optimal sound and to prevent record wear.

  1. Zero Balance: With the anti-skate control set to zero, release the tonearm clamp. Adjust the counterweight at the rear of the tonearm until the tonearm floats freely and horizontally.
  2. Set Tracking Force: Once balanced, hold the counterweight steady and rotate the numbered tracking force ring (usually located on the front of the counterweight) to "0".
  3. Apply Tracking Force: Rotate the entire counterweight (including the numbered ring) counter-clockwise until the desired tracking force is set. For this cartridge, the recommended tracking force is 3.0g (range 2.5g - 3.5g).
  4. Set Anti-Skate: Adjust the anti-skate control to match the tracking force setting (e.g., if tracking force is 3.0g, set anti-skate to 3).

Refer to your Technics turntable's specific user manual for detailed instructions on tonearm balancing and anti-skate adjustment, as procedures may vary slightly by model.

5. Operating Instructions

Once installed and adjusted, your MAG Turntable Titanium Stylus & Cartridge is ready for use.

  1. Place a record on the turntable platter.
  2. Ensure the turntable is powered on and connected to your amplifier/receiver.
  3. Carefully lift the tonearm using the cueing lever.
  4. Position the stylus over the desired starting groove of the record.
  5. Lower the cueing lever gently to allow the stylus to descend onto the record.
  6. At the end of the record, use the cueing lever to lift the tonearm and return it to its rest.

The moving magnetic cartridge with its diamond stylus needle is designed for excellent sound reproduction. You should experience clear and vibrant audio from your vinyl collection.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your stylus and cartridge.

6.1 Stylus Cleaning

  • Clean the stylus tip regularly, ideally before or after each play, to remove dust and debris.
  • Use a dedicated stylus cleaning brush, brushing gently from back to front (in the direction of play).
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents, as these can damage the stylus or cartridge.

6.2 Cartridge and Headshell Care

  • Wipe the headshell and cartridge body with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust.
  • Ensure the wiring connections remain secure and free from corrosion.
  • When not in use, always engage the tonearm clamp and, if available, use the stylus guard.
