Setup Instructions

1. Unpacking

Carefully remove the headshell, cartridge, and stylus unit from its packaging. Avoid touching the stylus tip directly to prevent damage.

The MAG Turntable M27BS unit comes pre-assembled, ready for direct attachment to your turntable's tonearm. Ensure your turntable is powered off before proceeding.

3. Balancing the Tonearm and Setting Tracking Force

Proper tonearm balance and tracking force are crucial for optimal sound and to prevent record and stylus wear. Refer to your turntable's manual for specific instructions on balancing, but generally:

  1. Zero Balance: With the anti-skate set to zero, adjust the counterweight until the tonearm floats freely and level.
  2. Set Tracking Force: Once balanced, rotate the numbered ring on the counterweight to '0' without moving the counterweight itself. Then, rotate the entire counterweight until the desired tracking force is indicated. The recommended tracking force for the M27BS cartridge is 3.0 grams (range: 2.5g to 3.5g).
  3. Set Anti-Skate: Adjust the anti-skate control to match the tracking force setting (e.g., 3.0).

Operating Your Turntable with the New Cartridge

Basic Playback

With the cartridge properly installed and the tonearm balanced, you are ready to play records. Ensure your turntable is connected to a phono preamplifier or an amplifier with a dedicated phono input. Place a record on the platter, select the appropriate speed, and gently lower the tonearm onto the record's lead-in groove.

Maintenance

Stylus Cleaning

Regular cleaning of the diamond stylus tip is essential for optimal sound quality and to prolong its lifespan. Use a soft stylus brush, gently brushing from back to front (from the pivot point towards the tip) to remove dust and debris. Never brush from side to side or front to back, as this can damage the stylus.

Cartridge Care

Keep the cartridge body clean and free of dust. Avoid exposing the unit to extreme temperatures or humidity. When not in use, ensure the stylus guard is in place to protect the delicate stylus tip.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions

  • No Sound or Low Volume:
    - Ensure all connections (headshell to tonearm, turntable to amplifier) are secure.
    - Verify that your amplifier's input is set to 'Phono' and not 'Aux' or 'Line'.
    - Check if the stylus is properly seated in the cartridge.
  • Distorted Sound or Skipping:
    - Recheck the tracking force. It should be set to 3.0g.
    - Ensure the tonearm is properly balanced.
    - Clean the stylus tip. Dust or debris can cause distortion or skipping.
    - Check for warped records or excessive dust on the record surface.
  • Humming Noise:
    - Ensure the turntable's ground wire (if applicable) is properly connected to your amplifier's ground terminal.
    - Check for interference from other electronic devices.
