PLIOGRIP Panel 90 Bonding Adhesive Instruction Manual

Brand: Plio Grip | Model: 8051

1. Product Overview

The PLIOGRIP Panel Bonding Adhesive is engineered for efficient and effective panel bonding, eliminating the need for traditional body fillers and welding in many applications. This non-flammable and odorless adhesive offers high resistance to heat, providing a durable and leak-proof seal between panels. It is designed to be sanded to a feather edge and painted, streamlining the repair process.

3. Setup and Preparation

Proper preparation is crucial for optimal bonding performance. Ensure the work area is well-ventilated.

3.1 Surface Preparation

  • Clean all bonding surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt, grease, oil, and any other contaminants.
  • For bare metal, aluminum, SMC, and fiberglass, ensure surfaces are free of rust or previous coatings. Lightly abrade surfaces for better adhesion if necessary.
  • Ensure surfaces are dry before adhesive application.

3.2 Adhesive Cartridge Preparation

  1. Remove the cap from the PLIOGRIP Panel 90 cartridge.
  2. Attach one of the included mixing nozzles securely to the cartridge. The nozzles are designed to automatically mix the two components of the adhesive as it is dispensed.
  3. Dispense a small amount of adhesive onto a scrap surface until a consistent, uniform color is achieved. This ensures proper mixing of the components before application to the bonding area.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Application

  1. Apply a continuous bead of PLIOGRIP Panel 90 adhesive to one of the prepared bonding surfaces. Ensure adequate coverage for the entire bonding area.
  2. Bring the two surfaces together within the specified work time. The adhesive contains glass beads to help maintain proper bond line thickness and prevent over-clamping.
  3. Secure the bonded panels with clamps or other appropriate fastening methods to maintain contact during the clamp time.

4.2 Curing Times

  • Work Time: Approximately 90 minutes. This is the time available to apply the adhesive and position the parts before the adhesive begins to set.
  • Handling Strength: 4 hours at room temperature (or 10-15 minutes at 180°F). After this period, the bonded assembly can typically be handled without disturbing the bond.
  • Paint Time: 8 hours at room temperature (or 25-30 minutes at 180°F). The adhesive can be sanded and painted after this time.

Note: Curing times may vary based on ambient temperature and humidity. Higher temperatures will accelerate curing, while lower temperatures will slow it down.

5. Maintenance and Storage

5.1 Storage

  • Store the PLIOGRIP Panel 90 adhesive in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Ensure the cartridge is properly sealed with its original cap when not in use to prevent air exposure and premature curing.

5.2 Cleaning

  • Clean tools and excess uncured adhesive immediately with an appropriate solvent (e.g., acetone or mineral spirits) before it hardens.
  • Once cured, the adhesive is very difficult to remove and may require mechanical means.

5.3 Disposal

  • Dispose of used cartridges and cured adhesive in accordance with local regulations for chemical waste.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Issue: Adhesive not curing or curing too slowly.

Solution: Ensure proper mixing of the two components. Dispense a small amount until a uniform color is achieved before applying to the work surface. Verify ambient temperature is within recommended range; lower temperatures will extend cure times. Check product expiration date.

  • Issue: Poor adhesion or bond failure.

Solution: Re-evaluate surface preparation. Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants. Ensure adequate pressure and clamping during the initial cure phase. Verify that the adhesive was applied within its work time.

  • Issue: Leaks after bonding.

Solution: PLIOGRIP Panel 90 is designed to create a leak-proof seal. If leaks occur, it may indicate insufficient adhesive application, improper surface preparation, or movement of panels during curing. Re-clean and re-apply adhesive to affected areas, ensuring full coverage and proper clamping.

  • Issue: Difficulty sanding or painting.

Solution: Ensure the adhesive has fully cured to its paint time. Premature sanding or painting can lead to poor results. Refer to the curing times in Section 4.2.
