Narex Dual Bevel Marking Knife Instruction Manual

Model: V2004070NX (0.060" Thick Blade)

1. Introduction

The Narex Dual Bevel Marking Knife is a precision tool designed for woodworking. It is used to create crisp, well-defined lines on wood surfaces, which are essential for accurate joinery layout and measurement transfer. These scribe lines also serve as guides for chisels and saws, improving the accuracy of cuts.

This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use, care, and maintenance of your Narex Marking Knife to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

2. Product Overview

The Narex Dual Bevel Marking Knife features a high-quality stainless steel blade and a Mexican Rosewood handle. Its design prioritizes precision and user comfort.

Key Components:

  • Blade: Made from AISI 420 corrosion-resistant stainless steel, hardened and tempered to HRC 57. It features a dual-bevel spear point tip, ground to 55 degrees with a 25-degree grind on both bevels. The blade is 1-7/8 inches long and 1/2 inch wide.
  • Finger Indents: Laser-cut indents on the blade provide a grip point for applying pressure closer to the tip, enhancing control for detailed work.
  • Handle: Constructed from 3/8-inch-thick Mexican Rosewood, hand-sanded and polished. The handle scales are secured to the blade with two brass pins. Its square profile prevents the knife from rolling off work surfaces.

3. Setup

Upon receiving your Narex Marking Knife, it may require a light stropping to achieve a razor-sharp edge. While the knife is precision ground, a final stropping can remove any minute wire edge from manufacturing and prepare it for immediate use.

Initial Edge Preparation:

  1. Obtain a leather strop and appropriate stropping compound.
  2. Apply a small amount of stropping compound to the leather strop.
  3. Lay the blade flat on the strop, matching the existing bevel angle.
  4. Draw the blade backward (edge trailing) across the strop with light pressure. Do not push the edge into the strop.
  5. Repeat this process on both bevels of the blade until the edge feels smooth and exceptionally sharp.

4. Operating Instructions

The Narex Dual Bevel Marking Knife is designed for precise marking on various wood types and grain directions.

General Marking Procedure:

  1. Positioning: Hold the knife firmly with the blade's bevel against your straightedge or reference surface. The dual bevel design allows for distinct lines on both sides of a guide.
  2. Pressure: Apply consistent, moderate pressure. Utilize the finger indents on the blade for enhanced control and to apply pressure closer to the tip for fine work.
  3. Scribing: Draw the knife along the reference surface in a single, smooth motion. For deeper lines, multiple passes with light pressure are recommended over a single heavy pass.
  4. Grain Direction: The dual bevel design performs effectively when marking with, against, and across the grain, as well as on end grain.
  5. Narrow Recesses: The blade's profile is particularly suited for marking in narrow recesses, such as when transferring pin and tail marks during dovetailing.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your marking knife.

Sharpening:

  • Regular stropping (as described in Section 3) will maintain the edge.
  • If the edge becomes dull or damaged, resharpen using fine-grit sharpening stones or diamond plates, maintaining the original 25-degree bevel angle on both sides.
  • Finish with stropping to remove any burrs and achieve a polished edge.

Cleaning and Storage:

  • After each use, wipe the blade clean with a dry cloth to remove any wood dust or residue.
  • Although the blade is corrosion-resistant, avoid prolonged exposure to moisture. If the knife becomes wet, dry it thoroughly.
  • Store the knife in a dry environment, ideally with a blade guard to protect the edge and prevent accidental injury.
  • The rosewood handle can be occasionally treated with a wood conditioner or wax to maintain its finish.

6. Troubleshooting

Addressing common issues to ensure effective use of your marking knife.

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • Problem: Knife leaves fuzzy or indistinct lines.
Solution: The blade may be dull. Refer to Section 3 (Setup) and Section 5 (Maintenance) for stropping and sharpening instructions. Ensure the blade is clean.
  • Problem: Difficulty in maintaining a straight line.
Solution: Ensure your straightedge or guide is securely clamped. Practice maintaining consistent pressure and angle against the guide.
  • Problem: Knife rolls off the workbench.
Solution: The Narex knife features a square handle profile specifically designed to prevent rolling. Ensure the knife is placed on a flat, stable surface.
