1. Introduction
This manual provides instructions for the proper assembly, operation, and maintenance of your Earthtec 12-inch Portable Planer Knife Setting Gauge. This tool is designed to accurately set the depth of planer blades on compatible models, including Delta 22-540 (Type 1 & 2) and TP300 planers, specifically for 48mm diameter cutter heads. Correct blade setting is crucial for achieving precise and consistent planing results.
2. Safety Information
Always prioritize safety when working with woodworking tools and sharp blades. Failure to follow safety guidelines can result in serious injury.
- Wear Protective Gear: Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection, when handling planer knives or operating a planer.
- Disconnect Power: Before performing any maintenance, blade changes, or adjustments on your planer, ensure the machine is unplugged from its power source to prevent accidental startup.
- Handle Blades Carefully: Planer knives are extremely sharp. Handle them with extreme caution to avoid cuts. Use gloves and avoid touching the cutting edge directly.
- Secure Work Area: Ensure your work area is clean, well-lit, and free from obstructions.
- Read Planer Manual: Always refer to your planer's instruction manual for specific safety warnings and blade changing procedures.
3. Product Components
The Earthtec Planer Knife Setting Gauge consists of the following parts:
- Main Rod (1)
- Gauge Brackets (2)
- Circlips (4)

4. Assembly and Setup
Follow these steps to assemble the knife setting gauge and prepare your planer for blade replacement.
- Assemble the Gauge: Slide the gauge brackets onto the main rod. Secure each bracket with two circlips, ensuring the horizontal bar can move freely.
- Prepare Planer: Disconnect the planer from power. Clean the planer's cutter head and mounting area thoroughly to remove any sawdust or debris.
- Mark Mounting Locations: Identify and mark the appropriate mounting locations on your planer's cutter head for the gauge.
- Position Gauge: Lower the assembled gauge to the marked locations and secure it in place.
- Leveling: Use a spirit level to ensure the gauge base is level. Adjust shims if necessary to achieve a perfectly level setup.

5. Operating Instructions
The knife setting gauge ensures accurate and consistent blade height for optimal planing performance. Always refer to your planer's manual for specific blade changing procedures.
- Insert New Blades: Loosen the blade clamping mechanism on your planer and carefully insert the new planer knives. Do not tighten them fully yet.
- Position Gauge: Place the knife setting gauge onto the planer's cutter head, ensuring the gauge brackets rest securely.
- Set Blade Height: Adjust each planer knife so its cutting edge aligns precisely with the designated setting surface on the gauge. The gauge is designed to set the blade to the correct height (e.g., 1.5mm as indicated on the gauge). Ensure the blade rests against the raised section of the gauge for accurate setting.
- Secure Blades: Once the blade is correctly positioned against the gauge, carefully tighten the blade clamping screws on your planer. Double-check that the blade remains in position while tightening.
- Verify Setting: After tightening, remove the gauge and re-verify the blade height. Repeat the process for all blades.

6. Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance will extend the life of your knife setting gauge.
- Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the gauge with a clean, dry cloth to remove any sawdust or residue.
- Storage: Store the gauge in a dry place to prevent rust or corrosion. Keep it away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the gauge for any signs of wear, damage, or deformation. Ensure the circlips are securely in place and the horizontal bar moves freely.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues while using the knife setting gauge, consider the following:
- Inconsistent Blade Height: Ensure the gauge is properly seated and level on the cutter head. Verify that the planer knives are resting against the correct part of the gauge's setting surface. A common error is resting the blade on the wrong section, leading to an incorrect height.
- Gauge Not Fitting: Confirm that your planer model (Delta 22-540 Type 1 & 2, or TP300 with 48mm cutter head) is compatible with this gauge. Check for any obstructions on the cutter head.
- Difficulty Assembling: Ensure the circlips are correctly installed to allow the horizontal bar to move freely. Refer to the assembly video if needed.
