4. Setup & Installation

Follow these steps carefully to assemble and install your sand filter pump system. Refer to the video for visual guidance.

4.1 Filter Assembly

  1. Install Drain Nozzle: Place an O-ring onto the long side of the filter drain nozzle. Route the nozzle from inside the filter barrel and push it out through the bottom drain hole. Place another O-ring and secure it with the nut from outside the barrel. Insert an O-ring into the drain hole nozzle cap and screw it onto the nozzle.
  2. Position Filter Assembly: Place the filter assembly inside the filter barrel. Position the funnel on top of the filter assembly, ensuring it is correctly inserted and centered within the barrel.
  3. Fill with Filter Media: Fill the filter barrel with your chosen filter media (filter balls or sand) according to recommended guidelines. Remove the funnel after filling.
  4. Install 4-Way Valve: Place an O-ring onto the 4-way valve. Position the valve on the upper part of the filter, ensuring the top of the filter assembly is properly inserted into the bottom of the valve. Ensure the valve pump opening aligns with the filter stand groove and the waste opening is oriented towards the drain nozzle. Secure the valve in place with the locking ring. Place the square nut on one side of each locking ring and tighten.
  5. Install Pressure Gauge: Secure the pressure gauge with plumber's tape. Remove the pressure gauge covering screw from the valve and screw the pressure gauge onto the valve.

4.2 Pump Installation

  1. Position Pump on Base: Place the pump on top of the system tray (mounting base), aligning it with all four screw holes.
  2. Secure Mounting Base: Flip the mounting base over and insert all four nuts into the mounting spaces. Carefully flip the mounting base back.
  3. Fasten Pump: Place the bolts into the screw holes and tighten all four bolts with a Phillips screwdriver to secure the pump to the base.
  4. Install Pump Adapters: Put O-rings on the hose adapters and screw the hose adapters onto the pump outlet and inlet.

4.3 Hose Installation

Ensure all hose clamps are securely tightened to prevent leaks. Verify O-rings are correctly seated.

  1. Filter to Pump Connection: Place a hose clamp on the hose adapter from the valve opening marked 'PUMP'. Connect a hose to this adapter and then to the pump's inlet hose adapter. Tighten both hose clamps.
  2. Pool Return to Valve Connection: Connect the hose from the pool's return inlet to the hose adapter from the valve opening marked 'POOL'. Ensure the O-ring on the hose adapter is not displaced during this process. Tighten the hose clamp.
  3. Pool Main Drain to Pump Connection: Connect the hose from the pool's main drain to the hose adapter on the pump's outlet. Tighten the hose clamp.

5. Operation

The 4-way multi-port valve allows for different operational modes. Always ensure the pump is OFF before changing valve settings.

Figure 4: Multi-port valve settings.

Valve Modes:

  • Filtration: This is the standard operating mode. Water is pumped from the pool, filtered through the sand media, and returned to the pool.
  • Backwash: Used to clean the filter media. Water flow is reversed, flushing trapped debris out through the waste port. Perform backwash when the pressure gauge reading is 8-10 PSI above the clean filter reading.
  • Rinse: After backwashing, this mode settles the filter media and removes any remaining dirt from the filter lines before returning to filtration mode.
  • Waste: Drains water directly from the pool, bypassing the filter. Useful for lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
  • Recirculate: Circulates pool water without filtering.
  • Winter: Used for winterizing the system.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your filter system.

6.1 Backwashing

Backwash the filter when the pressure gauge indicates a rise of 8-10 PSI above its normal clean operating pressure. This typically means the filter media is saturated with debris.

  1. Turn off the pump.
  2. Set the multi-port valve to 'BACKWASH'.
  3. Turn on the pump and run until the water from the waste port runs clear (typically 1-2 minutes).
  4. Turn off the pump.
  5. Set the multi-port valve to 'RINSE'.
  6. Turn on the pump and run for 30-60 seconds.
  7. Turn off the pump.
  8. Set the multi-port valve back to 'FILTRATION'.
  9. Turn on the pump to resume normal operation.

6.2 Cleaning the Pump Strainer Basket

The pump's strainer basket should be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent debris from entering the pump impeller.

Figure 5: Pump strainer basket.

  1. Turn off the pump and close any necessary valves to prevent water flow.
  2. Unscrew the clear lid of the strainer basket.
  3. Remove the basket and empty any collected debris.
  4. Rinse the basket thoroughly.
  5. Replace the basket and securely screw the lid back on. Ensure the O-ring is properly seated to prevent air leaks.
  6. Open valves and prime the pump if necessary before restarting.

6.3 Filter Media Replacement

Sand filter media typically lasts 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. Filter balls may require more frequent cleaning or replacement.

  1. Turn off the pump and disconnect power.
  2. Drain the filter tank completely.
  3. Remove the multi-port valve.
  4. Carefully remove the old filter media.
  5. Rinse the inside of the tank.
  6. Add new filter media, ensuring the standpipe is centered.
  7. Reassemble the valve and reconnect all hoses.
  8. Perform a backwash and rinse cycle before resuming normal filtration.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your sand filter pump system.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Low Water FlowClogged strainer basket, dirty filter media, air leak in suction line, low water level in pool.Clean strainer basket, backwash/rinse filter, check all connections for air leaks, ensure adequate pool water level.
Water LeaksLoose hose connections, damaged O-rings/gaskets, cracked housing.Tighten all hose clamps and connections, inspect and replace damaged O-rings/gaskets, contact customer support for cracked components.
Pump Not StartingNo power, tripped circuit breaker, motor issue.Check power supply and circuit breaker, ensure pump is plugged in, contact a qualified electrician or customer support if motor issues persist.
Cloudy Pool WaterInsufficient filtration time, dirty filter media, improper chemical balance.Increase filtration time, backwash/rinse filter, test and adjust pool chemicals.
