1. Introduction and Overview

3. Setup

3.1. Attaching the Camera Strap

Thread the ends of the AN-DC17 camera strap through the strap eyelets on the camera body. Ensure the strap is securely fastened to prevent accidental drops.

3.2. Charging and Inserting the Battery

  1. Insert the EN-EL15 battery into the MH-25A charger. Plug the charger into a power outlet. The charge lamp will blink during charging and turn off when complete.
  2. Open the battery chamber cover on the bottom of the camera.
  3. Insert the charged EN-EL15 battery into the chamber with the orange battery lock held to one side, ensuring the battery is oriented correctly. Push the battery in until the lock clicks into place.
  4. Close the battery chamber cover.

3.3. Inserting Memory Cards

The D500 supports two memory card slots: one for XQD cards and one for SD cards. Insert your SanDisk SecureDigital 64GB Extreme PRO Memory Card into the SD card slot with the label facing the correct direction until it clicks into place. Ensure the card is fully inserted.

3.4. Attaching a Lens

  1. Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear lens cap from the lens.
  2. Align the mounting mark on the lens with the mounting mark on the camera body.
  3. Rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it clicks into place.

3.5. Initial Power On and Basic Settings

Turn the camera on using the power switch located around the shutter button. Follow the on-screen prompts to set the date, time, and language. These settings are crucial for accurate metadata in your photos and videos.

4.2. Basic Shooting Modes
