1. Introduction and Overview

Thank you for choosing the Outsunny 12' x 8' Retractable Awning. This manual provides essential information for the safe assembly, operation, and maintenance of your new awning. Designed to provide shade and protection from the sun, this awning features a durable aluminum and steel frame with 280g/m² UV and water-resistant polyester fabric. Its manual crank operation allows for easy extension and retraction, making it a versatile addition to your deck, balcony, or yard.

Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and use, and retain it for future reference.

2. Safety Information

Your safety and the safety of others are very important. Please observe all safety warnings and instructions to prevent injury or damage.

  • Always ensure the awning is fully retracted during strong winds, heavy rain, or snowfall to prevent damage to the awning and property. Large amounts of rain can collect on the fabric and cause damage.
  • Assembly and installation require at least two people. Do not attempt to install alone.
  • Ensure the mounting surface (concrete, solid brick, or wooden wall) is structurally sound and capable of supporting the awning's weight and forces.
  • Use appropriate tools and hardware for installation. All included hardware is for concrete and wood surfaces. If installing on other surfaces, consult a professional or contact customer service to confirm feasibility.
  • Keep children and pets away from the awning during operation and installation.
  • Do not hang objects from the awning frame or fabric.
  • Regularly inspect all bolts, screws, and connections for tightness. Retighten as necessary.

Recommended Installation Height: 8.2 feet to 11.5 feet (2.5m to 3.5m) above the ground.

Reserved Installation Distance: A minimum of 11.75 inches (30cm) clearance is recommended above the awning mounting point.

Figure 2.1: Installation Suggestion Diagram

This diagram illustrates the recommended installation height range of 2.5-3.5 meters (8.2-11.5 feet) from the ground to the awning's mounting point, and a reserved installation distance of at least 30cm (11.75 inches) above the mounting point for proper clearance.

3. Package Contents

Before beginning assembly, ensure all parts are present and undamaged. If any parts are missing or damaged, do not proceed with assembly and contact customer service.

  • Torsion Bar
  • Support Arms (x2)
  • Wall Brackets (x2 or x3 depending on size)
  • Manual Crank Handle
  • Mounting Hardware (Bolts, Screws, Washers, Nuts for concrete/wood)
  • End Caps and Plastic Components

4. Setup and Assembly

Assembly requires careful attention to detail and the assistance of at least one other person. It is highly recommended to watch an assembly video if available, as written instructions can sometimes be challenging. Ensure you have the necessary tools before starting.

Tools Required (Not Included):

  • Drill with appropriate drill bits for your mounting surface
  • Level
  • Measuring Tape
  • Wrenches (e.g., 16mm, 14mm, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 5/16 inch)
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips and Flathead)
  • Pencil for marking

Assembly Steps:

  1. Prepare the Mounting Surface: Identify the ideal location for your awning, ensuring it is within the recommended installation height (8.2' - 11.5') and has sufficient clearance above (at least 11.75"). Mark the positions for the wall brackets using a level and measuring tape.
  2. Install Wall Brackets: Drill pilot holes and securely fasten the wall brackets to the chosen surface using the provided hardware. Ensure they are perfectly level and spaced correctly according to the awning's dimensions. It is often easiest to install the center bracket first, then measure for the outer brackets.
  3. Attach Torsion Bar: Carefully lift the torsion bar (the main support bar) and slide it into the wall brackets. Secure it in place with the appropriate fasteners.
  4. Assemble Arms: Attach the support arms to the torsion bar and the front bar. Ensure all bolts are tightened securely, but do not overtighten to allow for future adjustments.
  5. Insert Fabric: Carefully slide the awning fabric into the designated channels on the torsion bar and the front bar. Exercise caution during this step, as some users have reported fabric tearing if not handled gently, especially around sharp edges of the rods.
  6. Attach Crank Handle Mechanism: Connect the manual crank handle mechanism to the awning.
  7. Final Checks: Before first use, double-check all connections, bolts, and screws to ensure they are tight and secure.

5. Operating Instructions

Your Outsunny awning is designed for simple manual operation.

Extending and Retracting the Awning:

  • Locate the manual crank handle.
  • Insert the hook of the crank handle into the loop on the awning's gear mechanism.
  • To extend the awning, turn the crank handle clockwise. Continue turning until the awning reaches the desired extension or is fully extended.
  • To retract the awning, turn the crank handle counter-clockwise. Continue turning until the awning is fully retracted against the wall.
  • Remove the crank handle when not in use.

Adjusting the Awning Angle:

The awning's projection angle can be adjusted to provide optimal shade throughout the day. The adjustable range is typically between 45 and 85 degrees.

  • Locate the adjustment screws on the telescopic arms.
  • Loosen the locking screws on the extension arms.
  • Adjust the height of the extension arm to achieve the desired angle.
  • Once the desired angle is set, securely tighten the locking screws to fix the position.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life and appearance of your awning.

Fabric Care:

  • Clean the fabric regularly with mild soap and lukewarm water. Use a soft brush or sponge.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap residue.
  • Allow the fabric to air dry completely before retracting the awning to prevent mildew.
  • Do not use harsh detergents, bleach, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the fabric's UV and water-resistant coating.
  • Avoid folding or storing the fabric when wet.

Frame Care:

  • Wipe down the aluminum and steel frame with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.
  • Inspect all moving parts and connections periodically for wear or looseness. Tighten any loose bolts or screws.
  • Lubricate moving parts with a silicone-based spray if they become stiff or noisy.
