5. Setup

5.1. Find Your Car Paint Color Code

Locating your vehicle's paint color code is essential for ensuring an exact match. For Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the color code is typically found on a sticker or plate located in one of the following areas:

  • Driver's side door jamb
  • Under the hood, near the front of the engine compartment
  • In the trunk, under the mat

5.2. Test Color Match

Before applying paint to your vehicle, always perform a color match test using the provided test card. Apply a small amount of Colorcoat and Clearcoat to the test card and compare it to your vehicle's paint in various lighting conditions to confirm the match.

5.3. Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is crucial for a lasting repair. Begin by thoroughly washing the damaged area with soap and water to remove dirt and debris. Once clean and dry, use the included Wax & Grease Remover wipe to eliminate any residual wax, grease, or contaminants from the scratch. Allow the area to dry completely before proceeding.

6. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for applying the touch-up paint:

  1. Apply Primer (if needed): If the scratch exposes bare metal or plastic, apply a very light coat of Primer using the pen tip. Allow it to dry for a few minutes.
  2. Apply Colorcoat: Using the pen tip of the Colorcoat applicator, apply a very light coat directly into the scratch. Avoid applying too much paint at once. Allow each coat to dry for a few minutes before applying subsequent coats. Build up the color gradually until the scratch is covered.
  3. Apply Clearcoat: Once the Colorcoat is dry (typically after 24 hours for full cure), apply a very light coat of Clearcoat over the repaired area using the pen tip. This protects the paint and provides a glossy finish. Apply multiple thin coats, allowing each to dry between applications.
  4. Polish: After the Clearcoat has fully dried (refer to product instructions for specific drying times, usually 24 hours), gently polish the repaired area with a polishing compound and a soft cloth to blend it with the surrounding paint and achieve a smooth finish.
Four-step process for touch-up paint application: 1. Test Color, 2. Surface Prep, 3. Paint application, 4. Polish.

7. Maintenance

After the paint has fully cured, treat the repaired area like the rest of your vehicle's paint. Regular washing and waxing will help protect the touch-up paint and maintain its appearance. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning methods on the newly repaired area for at least 30 days.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1. Color Does Not Match

If the color does not appear to match after testing, ensure you have the correct paint code for your vehicle. Contact TouchUpDirect customer support with photos of your test card against your car for assistance. They may be able to custom mix a variant for a better match.

8.2. Clearcoat Finish is Not Smooth/Glossy

If the clearcoat appears matted or rough, it might be due to improper application or environmental factors. Ensure thin, even coats are applied. After full drying, polishing with a suitable compound can help achieve a smoother, glossier finish. Excessive primer application can also lead to a raised surface; use primer only when bare metal or plastic is exposed.
