1. Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the assembly, installation, usage, and maintenance of your vidaXL Galvanized Steel Gabion Wall. This product is designed as a durable and versatile retaining structure or decorative element for outdoor landscaping. Please read all instructions carefully before beginning assembly to ensure safe and correct installation.
2. Safety Information
Always prioritize safety during assembly and installation. Failure to follow safety guidelines may result in injury or damage to the product.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear heavy-duty gloves to protect hands from sharp edges of the wire mesh. Safety glasses are recommended.
- Lifting: The gabion panels and especially the filling material can be heavy. Use proper lifting techniques or seek assistance to prevent back injuries.
- Stability: Ensure the ground where the gabion is to be placed is level and stable. An unstable foundation can lead to structural failure.
- Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the assembly area to prevent accidents.
- Sharp Edges: Be aware of sharp wire ends during handling and assembly.
3. Package Contents
Verify that all components are present before starting assembly. If any parts are missing or damaged, contact vidaXL customer support.
- Gabion Wire Mesh Panels (sides, front, back, base)
- Top Cover
- Bottom Cover
- Connecting Spirals / Helical Wires
- Internal Bracing Wires (for larger units, to prevent bulging)
4. Setup and Assembly
The gabion wall is designed for straightforward assembly. Follow these steps carefully:
- Prepare the Site: Clear the area where the gabion wall will be installed. Ensure the ground is level, firm, and free of debris. For retaining walls, proper drainage and a stable foundation are crucial.
- Unpack Components: Carefully remove all panels and connecting spirals from the packaging.
- Assemble the Base: Lay out the base panel on the prepared ground.
- Attach Side Panels: Stand the side panels upright around the base. Use the connecting spirals to join the vertical edges of the panels to each other and to the base panel. Twist the spirals through the mesh openings to secure the connections.

- Form the Structure: Continue attaching all side, front, and back panels to form the complete rectangular cage. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.

- Install Internal Bracing (if applicable): For larger or taller gabions, internal bracing wires are essential to prevent the sides from bulging when filled. Attach these wires across the interior of the gabion at regular intervals, typically every 12-18 inches vertically.
- Fill the Gabion: Begin filling the gabion with your chosen material (e.g., rocks, gravel, recycled concrete). Ensure the material is evenly distributed and packed tightly to minimize voids. For aesthetic purposes, you may place flatter, more attractive stones on the visible outer faces.

- Secure the Top Cover: Once filled, place the top cover panel over the gabion. Secure it to the top edges of the side panels using the remaining connecting spirals. Ensure all edges are firmly connected to prevent material from escaping.
5. Operating and Usage
The vidaXL Galvanized Steel Gabion Wall serves multiple purposes in landscaping and construction:
- Retaining Wall: Its primary function is to act as a sturdy retaining wall, preventing soil erosion and managing slopes. The heavy fill material provides significant load capacity.
- Decorative Feature: Gabions can be used as attractive garden features, such as benches, planters, or decorative fences. The choice of filling material allows for customization to match your aesthetic.
- Sound Barrier: When filled with dense materials, gabion walls can effectively reduce noise transmission, making them suitable for properties near busy roads.
- Wind Protection: A solid gabion wall can offer protection against strong winds in exposed areas.

6. Maintenance
While galvanized steel gabions are highly durable and low-maintenance, periodic checks are recommended to ensure longevity and performance:
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the gabion wall for any signs of damage, such as bent wires, loose connections, or shifting of the fill material.
- Check for Settling: Over time, the fill material may settle. If significant settling occurs, the top cover can be temporarily removed to add more material and maintain the desired height and density.
- Cleaning: If desired, the exterior of the gabion can be cleaned with water and a soft brush to remove dirt or debris. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the galvanization.
- Corrosion Check: Although galvanized for rust resistance, inspect for any signs of rust, especially in areas where the coating might have been scratched or damaged. Minor rust spots can be treated with a rust-inhibiting paint suitable for galvanized surfaces.
7. Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues and their solutions:
- Gabion Sides Bulging: This usually indicates insufficient or improperly installed internal bracing wires. Ensure bracing wires are installed at appropriate intervals and are taut. Also, ensure the fill material is evenly distributed and not over-packed in one area.
- Instability or Leaning: Check the foundation. The ground must be level and firm. If the ground is soft, a compacted gravel base or concrete footing may be required. Ensure all panel connections are secure.
- Material Escaping: Verify that the mesh size is appropriate for your chosen fill material. If small stones are escaping, the mesh openings might be too large, or the top/bottom covers are not securely fastened.
- Difficulty Assembling Panels: Ensure panels are correctly aligned before attempting to twist the connecting spirals. Sometimes, a rubber mallet can be used gently to tap panels into alignment.
