Setup and Preparation

Ensure you have a clean, well-lit workspace. Gather the following tools:

  • Plastic model cement (e.g., polystyrene cement)
  • Hobby knife or sprue cutters
  • Tweezers
  • Small files or sanding sticks
  • Paint brushes or airbrush (for painting)
  • Paints and thinners (acrylic, enamel, or lacquer)
  • Decal setting solution

Carefully remove parts from the sprues using sprue cutters or a hobby knife. Clean any mold lines or excess plastic (flash) with a hobby knife or sanding stick. Test fit parts before applying adhesive to ensure proper alignment.

Assembly Instructions

Follow the numbered steps provided in the physical instruction booklet included with your kit. The general assembly sequence typically involves:

  1. Chassis Assembly: Begin with the lower hull, suspension components, and road wheels. Ensure all wheels are aligned correctly for a level stance.
  2. Upper Hull and Fenders: Attach the upper hull to the lower chassis. Assemble and attach fenders and other exterior details.
  3. Turret Assembly: Construct the turret, including the main gun, coaxial machine gun, and internal details if provided.
  4. Photo-Etched Parts: Carefully bend and attach photo-etched parts using super glue. These parts are delicate and require precision.
  5. Tracks: Assemble the individual track links. This is a meticulous process that requires patience. Ensure the tracks fit around the drive sprockets and idler wheels correctly.
  6. Final Details: Add tools, spare parts, and other small exterior details.

Allow sufficient drying time for adhesives between steps to ensure strong bonds.

Painting and Decaling

Painting is typically done after major assembly, but some sub-assemblies may be painted separately before final attachment. Refer to historical references or the kit's suggested paint schemes for accurate colors.

Painting Steps:

  1. Primer: Apply a thin, even coat of primer to all surfaces. This helps paint adhere better and provides a uniform base.
  2. Base Coats: Apply the primary camouflage colors in thin, even layers. Allow each layer to dry thoroughly.
  3. Detail Painting: Paint smaller details such as tools, tracks, and machine guns.
  4. Weathering (Optional): Apply washes, filters, and dry-brushing techniques to enhance realism and simulate wear and tear.

Decal Application:

  1. Ensure the painted surface is smooth and glossy. A gloss clear coat can be applied before decaling.
  2. Cut out the desired decal close to the image.
  3. Dip the decal in lukewarm water for 10-20 seconds until it slides freely on its backing paper.
  4. Carefully slide the decal onto the model surface using tweezers or a brush.
  5. Position the decal correctly. Use decal setting solution to help the decal conform to surface details and eliminate silvering.
  6. Once dry, apply a matte or satin clear coat to seal the decals and unify the finish.
